Every two years, the brass band Frieding invites you to a concert on Boxing Day.

After 2018, the next date would have been 2020 had it not been for the pandemic.

On Sunday, the almost 30 instrumentalists stood together on stage for the first time in four years for a big concert.

Frieding

– After four years of the compulsory Corona break, the musicians of the Frieding brass band amazed with their sound reliability and quality at their Christmas concert on Sunday in the fully occupied Erwin-Rauscher-Haus.

In view of the difficult rehearsal situation during Corona, this deserves special respect.

When the former mayor and moderator of the evening, Anna Neppel, more or less correctly announced “Supercalifragilisticexpialigetisch” from Mary Poppins, the mood could not be stopped.

Not even after the break, when the youth, under the direction of Verena Ullmann, continued what the adults had put on in the first half of the concert: a successful mixture of traditional brass band music, pop and pieces by modern composers.

The brass band has been playing under the direction of conductor Lukas Schrüfer since April - with audible success.

Be it the drums, which sometimes made themselves felt dominantly and other times accompanied the wind instruments almost imperceptibly.

Horns, baritone, tuba and trumpets, on the other hand, set the tone at one point, only to be sensitively reserved later, while the trombones shone with clean entries, the saxophones added the jazzy element and the clarinets and flutes provided melodic lightness.

The musicians had worked hard to switch between well-placed nuances and key moments, because during Corona every rehearsal was a challenge, said chairman Simon Birken in an interview with Starnberger Merkur.

"We couldn't rehearse for several months,"

remembered the grandson of Erwin Rauscher, who had once co-founded the band.

Birken organized zoom meetings, everyone practiced at home as best they could.

Later, the brass and drummers regrouped “at a distance of two meters” in the clubhouse to form a brass band.

The musicians mastered the difficult time with flying colors, which was already audible at the beginning with the "Vajnorska Polka".

Later carried away by the spirited panorama march, all feet and hands were shaking, including those of Mayor Georg Scheitz, who attended the concert with his wife.

"A Dream" (Neppel) was the interpretation of "My Dream" by the young composer Peter Leitner, whose solos Magdalena Bernhard on the flugelhorn with Julia Herkert and Verena Ullmann on the clarinet masterfully intoned.

The musicians mastered the difficult transitions of the medley "80er KULT(tour)" from five different pieces of music just as masterly and thus initiated the first awards after four years.

The award meant that the places for the instrumentalists were almost empty and instead the ranks of the honorees were filled.

Among them is Gottfried Fiedler, who has been playing the flugelhorn for 55 years – as long as the brass band has existed.

The "brass band has emerged from the pandemic in a great way and better than ever before," said Neppel, putting it in a nutshell.
