Vaterstetten

– The Vaterstetten association “Partnership with Alem Katema” drew a positive balance at the end of the year.

After successful fundraising, construction of the next kindergarten in the community in Ethiopia could begin as early as March 2023, the third of its kind in a successful model.

Incidentally, the new facility is to be named “Parsdorf”, after “Vaterstetten” and “Baldham”.

Incidentally, one of the ideas behind the association was Karlheinz Böhm (founder of “Menschen für Menschen”).

Donation goal reached

"We have reached the donation goal of 150,000 euros," says board member Alexander Bestle.

The last big step was the proceeds from the Humboldt-Gymnasium sponsored run: the result was 30,000 euros.

The grammar school and the Karlheinz-Böhm elementary and middle school together raised 60,000 euros for the new kindergarten.

"Sensational," says Bestle.

"We would like to thank all the organizers, runners and sponsors." Just as sensational, however, was the sum that was collected from large and small individual donations, namely more than 80,000 euros.

Clear rules secured by contract

In November, two board members were in Alem Katema so that every cent is used correctly in the project on site.

Everything is privately financed and not at the expense of donations, as the association emphasizes.

Whether the ground-breaking ceremony in March will actually work is still an open question.

"We no longer have that in our hands," says Bestle.

"It depends on the local authorities and permits, as it does here." We are "very happy" that we can finally keep a promise made in 2013 with the new kindergarten.

Reference to Karlheinz Böhm and "People for People"

Background: The partnership association was founded in 1994.

The initiators for the encounter and cooperation between the Ethiopian town of Alem Katema and Vaterstetten were Karlheinz Böhm (founder of “Menschen für Menschen”) and Peter Dingler, then mayor of Vaterstetten.

With donations from Germany, the association has so far built two kindergartens, a library and a local history museum in Ethiopia.

With the new kindergarten, young people with disabilities should also have access to education for the first time.

The association has two permanent employees on site.

A committee made up of citizens decides on the work in Ethiopia.

In Germany, the association has over 600 members.

Clear rules secured by contract

An implementation agreement for the new kindergarten was signed in Alem Katema with the local mayor, Birkabik Teshome.

Alem Katema therefore acts as a property developer, the Vaterstettener association provides financial support up to a defined maximum limit.

In addition, the association checks calculations and invoices and provides independent building supervision.

More good news

Another piece of good news: the people from Vaterstetten are entering into a permanent partnership with the German Church School, one of the leading educational institutions in the country, especially in the field of education for the disabled.

And: MALD Education, a school that offers state-certified training for educators in the field of education for the disabled, will start further training for kindergarten teachers in the existing facilities from the turn of the year.
