Weilheim – The district office of Weilheim-Schongau receives practical support from the Catholic Church in the search for accommodation for asylum seekers.
The Parish Church Foundation of the Assumption of Mary in Weilheim intends to make the "House of Encounter" in Weilheim available for accommodating refugees from January 2023.
The background is the currently high demand for accommodation, which the Weilheim-Schongau district is trying to cover intensively.
At the same time, the parish would like to avoid occupying gyms in the district.
"It is important to us that the gymnasiums in the district continue to be available to citizens and, above all, school children for sports, games and events.
At the same time, we would like to support the district in accommodating refugees.
These people should also have a roof over their heads,” said Pastor Engelbert Birkle from the parish of Weilheim.
According to Birkle, the community had already planned in advance not to heat the "House of Encounters" on Römerstraße for use this winter and instead to organize community activities in the Weilheim parish home "Together" on Theatergasse.
Then you got the request from the district office.
Thanks to the governor
"I am very pleased that the Weilheim parish is helping the district office with this difficult task of accommodating the refugees who have been assigned.
This is a very special Christmas present for me,” explains Jochner-Weiss.
The need for living space is very high due to the numerous allocations to refugees at the moment.
This also included numerous people who had fled to safety in Ukraine before the war.
"However, the needs of our own population are just as important to us - whether it's about living space or gyms.
That's why we are particularly pleased about this accommodation by the Catholic parish of Weilheim, thank you very much for it," said the district administrator.
The parish is currently in intensive contact with the Asylum and Integration department at the Weilheim-Schongau District Office.
A temporary lease is planned from January 1, 2023 to March 31, 2023 with an option to extend.
The building offers almost 500 square meters of space to accommodate around 50 people.
Lunch would be provided by a caterer, and according to Pastor Birkle, the kitchen in the House of Encounters would be available for breakfast and dinner.
A shower trailer in the parking lot will then complement the sanitary facilities in the house.
