A spokesman for the Architectural Services Department pointed out that at about 9:45 this morning, the jib of a crane on the top of a building at the site suddenly fell slowly during operation, and rested on the outer wall of the top of the building and stopped. No casualties were caused.
After the accident, the ArchSD and the Development Bureau immediately summoned the management of the contractor to ask for an account of the accident and discuss follow-up work and improvement measures.
After inspecting the construction site and reviewing the footage of the monitoring system, it was initially suspected that the accident was related to mechanical failure. The ArchSD is currently reviewing the inspection and maintenance records of the crane, and will continue to conduct detailed investigations together with the Labor Department.
The spokesman said that the government is very concerned about the incident and has requested the contractor and subcontractor to immediately suspend the operation of the relevant cranes and cordon off the site of the involved cranes to ensure the safety of workers.
Since the relevant contractor was involved in a fatal accident at the same site in May this year, the Bureau has ordered the contractor to immediately arrange an independent safety audit and submit a report within two weeks.
After reviewing the report, the Development Bureau will take appropriate follow-up actions in accordance with the procurement and supervision mechanism of public works projects. It has also asked the public works departments to step up inspections of the same type of cranes on public works sites under their jurisdiction.
