Consequences of war for Ukrainian oligarchs: Big losses for old-school businessmen

Forbes

says it created the ranking to understand how Ukrainian oligarchs fared in the face of the long war.

This gives a good overview of the state of the entire Ukrainian economy.

It turned out that the days of old-school businessmen were over, because they had to record disproportionately high losses.

Akhmetov's assets, for example, were still listed as 13.7 billion US dollars (a good 12.8 billion euros) in February, which means that he had to accept losses of more than two-thirds.

Vadim Novinsky, who holds shares in Metinvest, and Oleksandr Yaroslavskyj, head of the industrial and financial group DCH, both slipped significantly.

According to

Forbes

, Novinsky was down to $1 billion from $3.5 billion, while Yaroslavsky fell from $1 billion to $340 million.

Deaths and financial losses: Akhmetov's company in Russia's sights

In connection with Akhmetov, the Kiev Independent

refers to the losses at the Azovstal power plant in Mariupol, which had been heavily contested for weeks, and at the country's second-largest metallurgical company, Illich Iron and Steel Works.

His company, DTEK, reported 18 attacks on its facilities by early December, killing three and injuring 20.

The critical infrastructure in particular had repeatedly come under fire from Russia.

As

Forbes

further reports, the top 20 richest Ukrainians already include six entrepreneurs who have made their fortunes in the "knowledge economy" and have had no direct contact with the country.

This change of eras was "brutally accelerated" by the war.

Economic experts assume that as early as 2023 it will become clear how skilfully these businessmen of a new era will proceed in the reconstruction of Ukraine.
