"We've been really well received!" Johanna Modes and Tobias Gödl are currently doing federal voluntary service with the Dachau volunteer fire brigade – and they feel at home.

They are a novelty at the Dachau fire brigade: the first federal volunteers are doing their service.

Tobias Gödl, Johanna Modes and Leonardo Carretti feel comfortable at the Dachauer Wache - and the fire brigade are happy about the support.

Dachau – "I didn't want to study after high school, I wanted to do something tangible," says Tobias Göbl.

In July of this year, the 19-year-old from Dachau received his Abitur certificate from the Ignaz-Taschner-Gymnasium.

While his classmates are now at university, taking a sabbatical or traveling around the world, Tobias began his federal voluntary service on September 1st.

Namely with the volunteer fire brigade Dachau.

Together with Johanna Modes and Leonardo Carretti, he was one of the first federal voluntary service providers - Bufdis for short - at the Dachau Wehr.

For a year, the three of them support the fire brigade in day-to-day work, especially with tasks that arise in the security service, the workshops, in public relations and training.

This includes washing the work clothing, vehicle maintenance, logistics trips, checking the breathing apparatus.

The Bufdis are much more than just helpers.

“We see them as colleagues.

We are all on one level, despite all hierarchies.

The three of them are part of the team and therefore wear the same clothes,” explains trainer Florian Scharf, who has been with the volunteer fire brigade in Dachau for 25 years and has been there full-time since 2019.

Like all full-time and volunteers, the three Bufdis are an integral part of the troupe - at work and at the daily meals.

At the police station in Dachau we cook together.

Here, too, the three young people are firmly integrated.

"We were received very well," confirms Tobias Göbl.

His colleague Johanna Modes from Obermenzing also feels completely at home in Dachau.

She has been with the volunteer fire brigade there since 2021, so she brought previous knowledge with her and is now continuing her fire brigade training in Dachau.

At the technical college in Karlsfeld, she discovered the flyer about the voluntary service and applied.

Instead of sitting in a lecture hall, she “did rather drive missions.

That's cool, that's why you're in the fire brigade," explains the 18-year-old.

Since she completed her basic training two weeks ago, she is now allowed to come along on missions.

Tobias Göbl, who will start the "modular squad training" in January, is also looking forward to this.

This usually takes three years, but there is an accelerated procedure.

"We want to make it faster for Tobi," says Wolfgang Reichelt, spokesman for the Dachau fire department.

Tobias Göbl wants to stay with the FFW Dachau even after the federal voluntary service, which ends on August 31, 2023.

From September he will be training as a car mechatronics engineer.

In his first few weeks with the troops, he realized that he was extremely interested in vehicle technology and immediately applied to several potential employers – successfully.

And Johanna has also solidified her career aspirations.

She wants to be an emergency paramedic and has already sent out applications for it.

She also wants to continue with the volunteer fire brigade in Obermenzing – like many of her friends.

Firefighter Florian Scharf hopes that when Tobias, Johanna and Leonardo are no longer there, three new Bufdis will take up their duties.

Because even now he can no longer imagine a guard without this support.

"The three are a hundred percent support and relieve us enormously," enthuses Scharf.

Anyone who wants to apply can do so now.

The job advertisement for the Dachau fire brigade can be found at www.bundesfreiwilligendienst.de/bundesfreiwilligendienst/platz- Einsatzstellensuche/ Einsatzstelle-suchen/80542.

Applicants should come from the region and have a driver's license.

The fact that the Dachau fire brigade can take on federal volunteers is due to the "mixed system, which is unique in Bavaria", explains 47-year-old Florian Scharf.

Because two years ago, a mixed stand-by duty with full-time and volunteer forces was introduced in the Dachau Wehrmacht.

19 full-time firefighters work alongside 150 volunteer firefighters.

"But we are a fire brigade and a camaraderie," says Scharf, describing the team spirit of the Dachau troops.

This is the Federal Volunteer Service

The three "Bufdis" are not only a novelty in the fire brigade, but also the first service providers in the city of Dachau.

The Federal Volunteer Service is an offer to women and men of all ages to get involved outside of work and school for the common good - in the social, ecological and cultural areas or in the area of sports, integration as well as civil and disaster protection.

Volunteering is worthwhile for everyone and is a great personal benefit, especially for those who are committed: young people gain practical experience and knowledge and gain a first insight into the world of work.

Older people pass on their wealth of life experience to others, and by volunteering they can stay in the thick of things even after they retire – or find contact again after a family phase.

There have been numerous innovations in the Dachau volunteer fire brigade over the past two and a half years, the biggest being the establishment of a mixed stand-by service with full-time and volunteer workers in the station on January 1, 2020. With the Bufdis, who started their service on September 1 , another "target" was reached, according to the Dachau fire brigade in a press release.
