Customers should shell out up to 13 euros for a crab roll.

Hamburg, Büsum or Sylt - where the small shrimp from the North Sea are most expensive.

Hamburg/Sylt – They are a bit reminiscent of worms, but that's not the only reason why some people lose their appetite at the sight of a shrimp roll.

12.45 euros is on a price tag in the display with the snack that is so typical of Northern Germany.

That can only be Sylt, think many who see the picture posted on Twitter.

Are crabs the new oysters?

24hamburg.de compared the prices for shrimp rolls for consumers - and found something amazing.

Surname:

North Sea shrimp, colloquially known as crabs

Crab rolls for 12.45 euros: "It can only be Sylt, right?"

The tweet from December 24, 2022 with crab rolls for 12.45 euros each causes plenty of speculation.

"The shrimp cutter is definitely included in the price," speculates one user.

Another asks: "It can only be Sylt, right?" - And another user finds: "You can only boycott something like that." Are crab rolls on the celebrity island of Sylt really so expensive that the rich and beautiful now use them instead of oysters nibble on bubbly?

If the prices for crabs are based on the rising real estate prices on Sylt, then that could be true.

But far from it: The shrimp rolls on the North Sea island are reasonably affordable even for the average consumer.

At "Fisch Blum" in Westerland, it costs 6.50 euros, almost half of the tweeted record price.

The prices are also similar at fish pope Jürgen Gosch, who has just reopened his luxury restaurant “Jünne” in List: 6.50 euros at “Gosch am Strand”, on Friedrichstrasse you have to spend a little more at 6.80 euros.

Price of the day crab rolls – where the snack costs over 10 euros

So it's not Sylt - but where are the baked goods topped with the small sea creatures so expensive?

We look across the Hindenburgdamm to the mainland.

The shrimp strongholds of Büsum and Husum are located on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein.

One of the largest German shrimp cutter fleets is located in the fishing port of Büsum.

There, the fish shop offers Möller rolls with fresh North Sea shrimp for 7 euros.

The small North Sea shrimp also plays an important role in the North Frisian town of Husum and is honored every year at the Husum Crab Days.

In the “grey city by the sea” you can get shrimp rolls at Loof am Hafen for just 6 euros – a real bargain in comparison.

It continues from the North Sea to the Hanseatic city of Hamburg.

Fish sandwiches are offered for sale not only at the famous fish market, where live animals are no longer sold, but also at the Landungsbrücken.

At the bridge 10 there are lavishly filled crab rolls for the price of the day.

They didn't want to name the current one on the phone, but after researching on the Internet, it fluctuates between 11 and 12 euros.

The operators of other Hamburg fish roll stands were also not very willing to provide information on the phone.

One pointed out that due to the prices at the wholesale market, one could not keep up with Büsum or Husum, who presumably peeled their own crabs.

More than 10 euros for a crab roll?

For puling in Morocco: That's why North Sea shrimp are so expensive

It's hard to imagine at current prices, but crab used to be a poor man's food.

The animals were caught by women and children using sliding nets.

With the motorization of the fishing boats and the conversion to today's usual trawling, shrimp fishing became increasingly a profitable business.

The small shrimp are cooked immediately after being caught and are then only a few centimeters in size.

This makes it all the more difficult to free them from their shell.

Shrimp shelling is manual work.

For decades, this was done in northern Germany - many northern German housewives had a good side income as a result.

The crabs are now being transported to Morocco for puling.

A crab traveled 6,000 kilometers before it landed on a roll in Hamburg.

So it's no wonder that crabs are so expensive and that a machine is being developed in Lower Saxony that is supposed to peel crabs with ultrasound.

But also catch quantities and the pricing policy of the wholesalers have an influence on the – sometimes steep – prices for North Sea shrimp.
