Former Verdi home in Kochel named "Tear of the Year"

The Bavarian State Association for Home Care presents twelve buildings whose demolition it mourns.

In relation to the Verdi-Heim in Kochler, there were many discussions in the run-up, and even among monument conservators there was disagreement.

Kochel am See - Inspired by the "Goal of the Year" in football, the Bavarian State Association for Homeland Care is looking for the "Tear of the Year".

To this end, he presents a selection of twelve buildings on his website, from which the most bitter loss can be chosen.

The 2022 listing also includes the former Verdi home in Kochel am See.

With this action, the association wants to point out that monument protection is often ignored.

The Kochler Verdi-Heim was not listed as a monument, however, and inclusion in the list of monuments was rejected twice (we reported).

Club: "There is a lack of awareness"

"We observe with great concern that monuments and also older buildings that are not on the list of monuments are treated far too neglected," Rudolf Neumaier, managing director of the state association, is quoted in the statement.

"Our building culture is just as important for Bavaria as customs, dialects and traditional costumes." This is reflected in "numerous calls for help" from all parts of Bavaria when people contact the association or the "Bavarian Monument Network Initiative".

According to Neumaier, owners and investors, but also authorities and politicians, "unfortunately always lack awareness of the cultural significance of monuments".

Buildings worth preserving are allowed to fall into disrepair until they can no longer be saved.

Changeful history

The Verdi home in Kochel was built in 1930 by Emil Freymuth in the Bauhaus style and has had an eventful history.

The last decision not to place it under protection was made in February 2022 by the State Monument Council chaired by Thomas Goppel.

In the run-up, there was another investigation by architect Florian Nagler, who saw opportunities for the preservation of the building.

The resumption of the proceedings was initiated by a couple from Kochl, who are committed to monument protection.

Dispute in the National Monuments Council

Opinions as to whether the building, which has been in the hands of investors for several years, should be preserved or not, differed in the State Monument Council, Goppel reported at the time and argued: Even in the past few years, the interests of monument protection had not been taken into account.

If such a derelict building had been placed under protection after all, the costs would have “immeasurably increased”.

What will happen to the area now?

Contrary to what was announced in the spring, the investor has not yet announced his plans for a development.

The regional association for home care “honours” eleven other buildings throughout Bavaria as “demolition of the year”.

In January, the association wants to present twelve monuments that need to be worried about in 2023, according to the statement.
