The surprising demand for the realization of a combi-platform is a tough nut to crack for the municipality, because it would make the plans for the central bus station (ZOB) impossible to implement.

Mayor Alfons Besel is now counting on new talks in January.

Gmund – At the end of November, Besel informed his local council about the new situation: At a meeting of the municipality and the Tegernsee-Bahn at the government of Upper Bavaria, which dealt with the declassification of railway areas, Gmund was asked by the Ministry of Construction and Transport and of the Bavarian railway company to build a combination platform.

This is a platform that allows you to switch between different means of transport with different requirements in terms of route or platform height - ideally without having to climb steps.

Apparently, this has become a popular idea to better link public transport.

In addition, it is assumed that there will be significantly more passengers in the future due to the Miesbach district joining the MVV and the electrification of the route.

There is also talk of using longer or double-decker trains.

This then requires safe passenger guidance - via a combination platform.

It is clear what that would mean for the plans for the redesign of the station area with the central bus station (ZOB) plus park-and-ride area (P&R), which are now well advanced: they would be useless.

Because: Strictly speaking, the existing track would have to be relocated and a new platform built.

The previously planned Mittelsteig at the ZOB would be obsolete.

Apparently there was another conversation these days.

"We made it clear that we could not technically imagine this combination platform," reports Besel from the meeting.

"From a spatial point of view, we would have a problem with the park-and-ride and bicycle parking facilities.

We want to create a completely modern transport hub in Gmund, which would not be possible in the end.” The interviewees understood this view of Gmund, but still asked for it

Immediately after the conversation, he asked the planning company Lars Consult to draw up a new sketch, reports Besel.

At the end of January, they want to invite everyone involved to an appointment in Gmund.

Combination platform for Gmund?

However, the municipality rules out the laying of tracks

Laying the platform for the combination platform rules out Besel.

"That's not possible because of the narrow curves." Besel throws another argument into the equation: a combi-platform, which would require a completely new arrangement of the central bus station, would mean new danger points for bus passengers.

He can understand that it's about the safety of the train passengers, but that's just the view of the train.

"For the passengers between bus and bus, safety would deteriorate.

The current framework plan with the middle platform for bus passengers and the further traffic routing for pedestrians is "optimal", says Besel.

Besel cautiously and diplomatically explains why the proposal is only now appearing, although the Gmunder plans are so far advanced: "In view of the MVV membership and electrification, further considerations are thriving."

One thing is certain: Gmund would play a pioneering role in the surrounding area with a combination platform.

"At least we weren't shown any best practice examples," says Besel.

The community will weigh all arguments at the meeting.

He's hoping for a sensible outcome, Besel adds.

Gmund is planning to remodel the station area: excavators are to move in in 2024

Regardless of the "complex and surprising matter" (Besel), the project to redesign the station is being pushed ahead.

Bidder talks with civil engineering firms have meanwhile been held, and the municipal council will probably award an order in January.

Planning should be completed by 2023, "by 2024 the excavators should be on the property," Besel hopes.
