In Hesse, queer couples can now also benefit from state funding for fertility treatment.
As the Ministry of Social Affairs announced, with a new guideline that will come into force at the end of the year, state funding will also apply to same-sex female couples who are childless due to illness.
In addition, couples are taken into account in which one partner is transgender - Hessen is the first federal state in which this is expressly done.
For almost a year, the state of Bremen has been promoting fertility treatments for couples where “at least one person has a female reproductive organ”.
According to the information, the support in Hesse is funding for the fourth attempt.
The first three attempts would be at least partially covered by the health insurance companies.
"In Hesse, we support families regardless of their constellation," Minister of Social Affairs Kai Klose (Greens) is quoted in the statement.
»Unwanted childlessness can be a great burden both mentally and physically.
With our funding guideline, we at least alleviate the financial burden.«
Together with the federal government, treatment costs would be covered up to a maximum of 3,300 euros, it is said - but in the case of the new funding guideline this only applies to couples of different sexes.
Since the federal government has so far only supported opposite-sex couples, state funding of up to a maximum of 2,200 euros is possible for same-sex couples.
The state has been promoting fertility treatments since 2018 – so far only for heterosexual couples.
According to the information, money has been granted in 800 cases so far.
