Immediately after the swearing in of the government: the incoming minister of religious services froze the kosher reform Israel today

2022-12-29T17:26:45.756Z

The reform, which was launched only last January, allows any food production and sales business to choose which city rabbi will grant them a kosher certificate. Already with the beginning of the coalition contacts with the Likud, there was concern that the ultra-orthodox would mark the cancellation of the reform as one of their first steps with the formation of the government. This month because they are not excited about the move: "We are growing every day"

Even before the swearing-in day of the new government ended, the Minister of Religious Services, Michael Malchiali, rushed to sign a decree canceling the kosher reform initiated by outgoing minister Matan Kahana.

The decree was signed this evening in the office of the Sephardic Chief Rabbi, Yitzhak Yosef.

The decree itself orders to freeze the existing situation, meaning that it will not be carried out in kashrut corporations, etc.

The minister's office told "Israel Hayom" that in the coming months, orderly legislation will be passed to completely cancel the reform.

We should note that the move was already marked in advance as one of the first of the incoming government, although probably no one imagined that it would be done already on the day of the inauguration.

Orthodox sources told "Israel Today" this month that "this reform should disappear from the world."

We will explain that the reform, which allows any business that produces and sells food to choose which city rabbi will grant them a kosher certificate, was introduced in July 2020. Already upon its introduction, it caused an uproar because it changed world order in the Chief Rabbinate - after decades in which businesses were forbidden to present themselves as kosher without With its approval, the government promoted the privatization of the kashrut field.

The first phase of the reform, according to which any religious council will be able to provide kosher services anywhere, began already last January with very limited success.

The second and central phase, which was supposed to begin on January 1, 2023, is much more ambitious: the rabbinate was supposed to stop providing kosher services and become a regulator that would approve them for private corporations to be established.

At the same time, all three city rabbis will be allowed to provide alternative kosher services.
