The intensive search for 11-year-old Madalina Cojocari has been hampered by how late North Carolina police were notified of her disappearance, Cornelius Police Capt. Jennifer Thompson said in a video update.
“One of the challenges in this case, simply put, they didn't notify us that he was gone,” Thompson said.
The search for Madalina has the police searching the world over.
"Investigators have crafted and pursued nearly 250 leads that stretch across state lines and around the world," Thompson said Tuesday.
Madalina's parents were arrested on December 17 for failing to report her missing, police said earlier in a news release.
Her mother, Diana Cojocari, is being held on $250,000 bond while her stepfather, Christopher Palmiter, is being held on $200,000 bond, according to jail records.
CNN has tried several times to contact Diana Cojocari's lawyer.
A spokesperson for the law firm representing Palmiter previously said they could not comment at this time.
“This is a serious case of a minor whose parents are clearly not telling us everything they know,” Thompson said.
"Please call us if she has any eyewitness information."
Authorities released surveillance video from the school bus that they say shows 11-year-old Madalina Cojocari missing, just days before she was last seen.
Madalina's poster appears first on the Charlotte FBI website.
She was last seen on November 23, "wearing jeans, pink, purple and white Adidas shoes, and a white T-shirt and jacket," the FBI said.
Cornelius is approximately 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Charlotte, North Carolina.
