On November 29, Pelé arrived at the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital to receive treatment for a respiratory infection and for a re-evaluation of the chemotherapy treatment that he is undergoing for a colon tumor.
The hospital reported that Pelé "presents progression of the oncological disease and requires greater care related to renal and cardiac dysfunctions."
On September 6, 2021, Pelé announced on his social media that he had undergone surgery to remove a tumor from his colon two days earlier.
On September 30, he was discharged from the Sao Paulo hospital where he had undergone surgery.

Pelé's son and soccer coach, Edson Cholbi do Nascimento, commonly known as Edinho, arrived at the Albert Einstein Jewish Hospital in São Paulo on Saturday, according to an Instagram post by his sister Kely Nascimento.
Nascimento also posted a photo with his brother and other family members from inside the hospital where his father and soccer legend has been since late November, writing in the caption that "I won't leave, no one will take me out of here".
