The black year of Network and Rainbow: the prime drops on both channels; The news was cut by more than a tenth

Viewership of Israel's largest channels, Keshet 12 and Reshet 13, continues to decline, and the year 2022 will be recorded as a year in which historical low moments were recorded in the news companies - as shown by the viewing figures of the various channels.

It should be noted that in a strange way - the ranking committee, for the first time, decided this year not to provide the annual viewing data under a decision made to "publish only the daily and weekly reports".

A brief perspective: in October 2021, News 12, which is popular in Israel, recorded the lowest viewership average in recent years - only 14.7%.

At the time, this was the lowest figure since the merger between Keshet and News 12 in January 2019, when before that the news company was under the joint ownership of Keshet and Reshet - and under the screen of Channel 2. However, the entire year 2022 ends with News 12 with a similar figure - only 15.3% viewership (And only among the Jewish households, in the general population the rate of viewing these channels is much lower).

By the way, the overall viewing average for the 12 editions in 2021 was 17.1%, so this is a drop of over 10%.

The "Evening News" here and the news broadcast on Channel 14 are the only ones that end 2022 with an increase.

Here the release increases from 4.1% to 4.5%.

Channel 14 recorded the biggest jump - from 1.4% to 2.2%

As for news 13 - it started the year 2022 low, and since then it has only decreased further and ended with an annual average of 7.4% (compared to 8.3% in 2021).

As I recall, News 13 recorded a number of historic low points during 2022, in which the viewership hovered around 5 percent.

And in May it recorded its lowest figure in 18 years.

News 13 also deals with a multi-year trend: from checking Walla!

Branch reveals that during the three years of the merger - News 13 was cut to almost a fifth.

"Evening News" here and the short newscast on Channel 14 are the only ones that end 2022 with an increase.

Here the edition - which maintains its power as the most watched television product in Here 11 - rises from 4.1% to 4.5%.

Channel 14 recorded the biggest jump - from 1.4% to 2.2%.

There is no dispute about the basic facts

In summary: with all the importance of digital, even in 2023 Keshet and Reshet's challenge will be to provide content attractive enough to watch in real time

The news, of course, does not sit in an empty space, but is given (and usually represents) the full channel screen and its products, which are reflected in prime time.

And the data - respectively - dives into it as well.

Keshet 12 ends 2022 with an average viewership of 14.7% compared to 16.7% in 2021.

Network 13 finishes with 9.6% against 11%.

Opposite, mainly thanks to the month of the World Cup, the prime of Kan 11 rises from 3.4% in 2021 to 4.3% in 2022.

Channel 14, which this week marked the anniversary of its rebranding, ends the year with a doubling of the average number of viewers from 0.9% to 1.7%.

In the case of Channel 14, the increase is actually attributed to a cumulative trend of the last few months.

One of the explanations for the low data is the corona virus.

Television, which for three years became significant and dominant in people's lives, actually "froze" the downward trend (due to the high consumption of news, isolation and the fact that hundreds of thousands of Israelis stayed in Israel instead of flying), and it continues now in full force.

But the corona virus does not stand alone, and the television channels also understand that the more significant and less specific reason is the increasing competition from international giants such as Netflix, Disney, Amazon and Apple.

It doesn't have to be that way.

In the UK for example, Netflix recently joined the British Ratings Board (BARB), but broadcast viewing remains significantly larger.

On the other hand, even the erosion of CNN - another global case study - can teach something about what is expected in the future in Israel.

But the bottom line is that there is no dispute about the basic facts: the competition for the viewers' attention has become more difficult, more violent and stronger in 2022.

Both in terms of content and platforms and also in terms of the ways of viewing the news that are possible anytime and anywhere.

Or in summary: with all the importance of digital, even in 2023 Keshet and Reshet's challenge will be to provide content attractive enough to be viewed in real time.

A glorious failure.

The losers and the losers

It is hard to ignore the notable failure of Keshet 12 this year - the reality show "The Group", which achieved low figures in primetime, was pushed a few weeks later to late night, until it disappeared from the screen altogether

In an overall view, Keshet's main television programs decrease relatively little in 2022: "Amazing Land" with an average viewership of 18.8% (compared to 2019 with 19.4%);

"Ninja Israel" with 18.1% (compared to 20.9% in the previous season);

And Hatunami: the 2022 season with 18% versus 18.7%.

However, it is hard to ignore the notable failure of Keshet 12 this year - the reality show "The Group", which achieved low prime numbers, was relegated to late night a few weeks later, until it disappeared from the screen altogether.

At the same time, Bekeshet already recognized two years ago the need for additional ways of reaching the viewers and in recent years have been working on, among other things, the recently launched 12 Plus application (technological and interface upgrade for Mako TV) and soon the launch of the Free Tv streaming project.

Network 13, on the other hand, will have difficulty relying on significant central success among viewers at the end of 2022.

Among the prominent failures of the channel, on the other hand, will be recorded the original reality show "Changing Chef" in which millions of shekels were invested, and whose final episode reached only 5 percent ratings.

As of writing these lines, the food reality show of the "Chef Games" network also failed "at the box office" and the new season of "Survival" refuses to take off.
