According to the government in Kyiv, Russia has attacked Ukraine nationwide with more than 120 rockets.
There were heavy explosions in the capital and other cities.
The situation is confusing, and air alerts have been raised across the country.
These were the heaviest missile attacks since December 16, when Russia launched massive aerial bombardments and warships in the Black Sea.
It was the tenth such wave since October.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had been warning of the threat of new attacks for days.
Attacks were reported by authorities in several parts of Ukraine in the south and west.
Explosions were also reported from the Poltava, Odessa, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Lviv regions.
The information cannot be verified independently.
Apparently injured in Kyiv
Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that a house in the city had been hit.
Two people were rescued and taken to the hospital.
A total of three people were injured in the attacks, including a 14-year-old girl.
It is not yet clear whether and to what extent there were rocket hits.
According to the authorities, the Ukrainian air defense was deployed in many places to repel the attacks.
Klitschko, for example, spoke for Kyiv of 15 rockets that had been destroyed over the capital.
In the center, a car was also hit by falling rocket debris.
Since October, Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukraine's energy supply network at intervals of a few days, usually with dozens of missiles at a time.
Despite the high number of kills by the Ukrainian air defense, some hit their target.
Millions of people in the country are therefore affected by massive power and water supply failures in winter.
It is still unclear what damage the current wave of attacks has caused.
