This year, too, many recipients have certainly found presents under the Christmas tree that they don't like.

Munich in Germany - If you don't want to leave your unloved gifts gathering dust in the corner of the cupboard or throw them in the trash, you have many options.

They are also more sustainable.

EXCHANGE

Anyone who dares to ask for the receipt can exchange the unwanted gift in the store.

However, there is no statutory right of exchange for flawless goods.

The exchange depends on the goodwill of the dealer.

In the case of defective goods, however, customers are entitled to a replacement.

In the case of products ordered online, on the other hand, the right of withdrawal applies in principle.

The goods can be returned within two weeks, the period usually applies from the receipt of the goods.

The revocation must be declared beforehand, for example in writing or by telephone.

CDs, DVDs and software must still be sealed when being exchanged.

The right of withdrawal is excluded for custom-made products such as engraved jewelery or photo albums and for concert tickets with a fixed date - the same applies to products with special hygienic protection, such as cosmetic products, erotic toys, contact lenses or toothbrushes.

According to the Brandenburg consumer advice center, the right of withdrawal already applies to underwear and swimwear.

SELLING

The easiest way to get rid of unwanted gifts is at online auctions.

The gift can also be passed on on marketplaces for classified ads.

Anyone who sells on the Internet should definitely register as a private seller.

Then no right of revocation or return has to be granted.

The statutory warranty can also be excluded with a note.

The sentence "The goods are sold without any warranty" creates clarity.

The information about the items offered on the Internet must be correct.

In addition, photos and product descriptions may not simply be copied from the manufacturer's website for copyright reasons.

It is therefore better to take your own photos and write your own texts.

TO DECEIVE

There are also exchange platforms on the Internet - there the exchange works like in real life: goods for goods.

The so-called scrap Secret Santa is also very popular - whatever is no longer needed is wrapped up and exchanged for another present in a larger group.

GIVE AWAY

If you don't like your gift, you can simply give it to someone else at the next opportunity.

Maybe the present will trigger real joy.

This is of course also possible online - many portals offer the option of delivering the goods free of charge.

DONATE

If you want to do something good with your unloved Christmas present, you can of course also donate the goods.

Organizations like Oxfam resell the items to help people in need.

They take clothes, books or games, for example;

it is important that the goods are not damaged or dirty.

The proceeds from the sale flow into social or development projects.

FAULTY GIFTS

Defective or damaged gifts can be claimed within two years of purchase upon presentation of the receipt.

In the case of used goods, the statutory warranty period may be shorter.

The European Consumer Center also offers a portal called "Successful Complaints": Consumers have to enter how and where the goods were bought and what the problem is.

Then the complaint options are explained.
