At the end of a year marked by the Russian war in Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on the people of Germany to be confident and stick together in his New Year's speech.

And he condemns Vladimir Putin.

The head of the Kremlin is "waging an imperialist war of aggression in the middle of Europe," he says.

In Germany, the effects of the war are felt "when shopping in the supermarket, at the gas station or when we pay the electricity or gas bill."

Scholz says the Ukrainians are bravely defending their homeland - also thanks to German help.

Putin has not split the alliances of the EU and NATO, but rather they are “more united than they have been for a long time”.

"And we in Germany didn't give in," says Scholz, "when Russia turned off the gas supply to us in the summer.

Because we don't allow ourselves to be blackmailed!"

Germany and Europe will become permanently independent of Russian gas, says Scholz.

He refers to the new liquid gas terminal in Wilhelmshaven, which "was built in less than 200 days."

"In the coming weeks and months, more liquid gas terminals will go into operation - in Lubmin, in Stade, in Brunsbüttel."

The Chancellor thanks the people for saving energy, "that will remain important in the coming months." Germany is "a country that joins forces, especially in difficult times," Scholz is certain.

"A country in which we leave no one behind - whether in the city or in the country, whether old or young, whether well-off or less wealthy, whether they were born here or came here later." The greatest asset is cohesion.

Finally, the chancellor referred to the relief packages from the traffic light government "so that everyone in Germany can cope with the increased prices."

"Let's stay true to the path," says Scholz, "that we took last year!

Let's go on boldly!"
