Many cyclists have been waiting for them for a long time: fast cycle paths on which they can progress quickly and with as few crossings as possible.

Garching/district

- A 30-kilometer route is to connect Munich's main train station with the town of Unterschleißheim or Garching and continue to the research campus.

The route is to be two-lane so that cyclists can enjoy a high level of driving comfort, and they are also to have priority over crossing traffic for the most part.

First preparations

The state capital has already begun.

The first section in the district will finally be built in 2023.

First preparations are made to start in Garching.

The district council has unanimously decided that by the end of February trees and bushes will be felled where the route branches off from the B13 in an easterly direction to Hochbrück.

It is still completely uncertain when construction will begin along the B13 from the border of the state capital in a northerly direction.

The Freising State Building Authority is responsible for the section on the federal road.

The cycle expressway is considered part of the B13, so - as is usual with changes to federal roads - a planning approval procedure is necessary.

"Everyone involved is involved," explains Tanja Sartorius from the Freising State Building Authority, which is responsible for the section between the Munich city limits and the B13/B471 intersection, as well as the further section along the B13 to Unterschleißheim.

“We cannot estimate how long the planning approval process will take.

It's the very first cycle highway that we're building," says Sartorius, adding that initial talks are being held with landowners.

7.1 kilometer long route in Garching city area

The construction of the 7.1 kilometer long route in the Garching city area is somewhat easier.

The district is responsible for this.

The section begins on the south-western edge of Garching-Hochbrück south of the B13/B471 intersection and has the prescribed width of 6.5 meters for cycle expressways: 4 meters for the cycle path and 2.5 meters for the sidewalk that runs parallel to it.

The bridge over the Schleissheim Canal is too small and will be replaced by a wider bridge.

The route then continues eastbound north of the canal.

Before the subway underpass, it turns north and runs west of the tracks in the direction of Hochbrück subway station.

The first section costs 4.5 million euros

The first section, which the district will build in 2023, is expected to cost 4.5 million euros.

The second and third sections to Garching and the research center are being planned.

They are to be implemented in 2024.

The route mostly runs on land owned by the city of Garching.

The votes with a few private owners have been largely completed, according to the district office.

Route from Lehel to Markt Schwaben

Another fast cycle route is to lead from Lehel to Markt Schwaben (Ebersberg district), via Riem, Feldkirchen, Aschheim and Kirchheim.

The state capital and district of Munich have already approved the route.

The route is now being planned in detail.

There are also studies for a main cycle connection from Oberhaching to Munich.

However, because a railway underpass would have to be widened in the Oberhaching area, the implementation encountered problems.

A new route is being sought so that it cannot be implemented in the near future.
