Name trends are pretty persistent.

Also this year there is little movement in the first name ranking.

An expert also reveals which name parents should think twice about.

Munich/Ahrensburg – Hundreds of thousands of children are born in Germany every year.

Just as many first names are given.

A ranking of boys' and girls' first names shows which names were particularly popular in 2022.

At the forefront are Emilia and Noah, which are already among the long-running first names.

And like every year, a few names were given that caused confusion.

The ranking author even advises against a certain name.

As for girls names, everything is the same.

Emilia continues to lead the name ranking by first name expert Knud Bielefeld, which became known on Friday (December 30).

For boys, the name Noah boxed its way back to first place, having already led the ranking in 2020.

"Both names have been in the top ten for a long time," Bielefeld told dpa.

The name Theo also made it into the top ten, coming sixth in the youngsters' ranking.

Things are going worse for Ben.

This boy name topped the rankings for nine years through 2020.

It is now only in tenth place.

"It seems to be slowly going out of fashion now and long-standing top names like Lukas or Luka are slowly disappearing from the first name lists," explained Bielefeld.

First name ranking: Expert reveals no-gos when choosing a name

In addition to the frequently assigned names, some curiosities can also be found.

“A few names that caught our attention unusually, but also appear a few times.

For example, the girl's name Lafayette, Gitty or Jorieke and the boy's name Bel Miro, Janeiro, like Rio de Janeiro and Perigrin," Bielefeld told the

broadcaster .

The expert likes creativity when choosing a name, but there are also cases that don't work for him.

“What actually comes up a lot is a name like Marie Johanna — which sounds like marijuana.

If you think about it a bit, then you should leave it," said the naming expert.

At the back of the table, Bielfeld found a name that is becoming increasingly popular.

The boy name Nelio has risen sharply in the ranking.

"That seems to be because entertainer and influencer Dagi Bee named her son that at the end of last year," the expert suspects.

Regional differences in naming: Northern parents are innovative

Bielefeld also sees regional differences in the naming.

Older names like Lukas or Maximilian stick around longer in the south than in the north.

Parents in the north are a bit more innovative.

In general, the expert has a good tip for parents.

"You shouldn't put your own needs as parents in the foreground, but think about it, it's the child that has to live with the name," said Bielefeld.

If parents want their kids to earn a lot of money in the future, they should take a look at another ranking.

This reveals which first names earn the best.

Bielefeld and his team used data on first names from 423 cities to evaluate the names.

Two-thirds of the data is obtained from registry offices and the rest from baby galleries from maternity hospitals.

According to its own information, Bielefeld records the names of around 34 percent of babies born in Germany.
