Dancing to prison?

In Italy it will be forbidden in the future, under threat of high penalties, to organize raves or other music events without a permit.

Organizers of the events face imprisonment of three to ten years and fines of up to 10,000 euros.

After a sometimes tumultuous session, parliament passed the law pushed for by the right-wing government.

Chamber President Lorenzo Fontana of the right-wing Lega had previously abruptly ended the discussion in a historic action so that the vote could still take place on Friday.

The opposition had delayed her speeches for hours.

President Sergio Mattarella signed the law in the evening.

The government around the post-fascist Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says it wants to use the law to take action against illegal events where drugs are traded and public safety is endangered.

In Italy there are always techno raves, sometimes attended by thousands of people.

Lega boss Salvini: "The beautiful life is over"

The raves have been a thorn in the side of the right-wing governing parties for months.

Matteo Salvini, party leader of the right-wing Lega, welcomed an eviction campaign in the city of Modena in October via Twitter with the words: "The beautiful life is over".

Critics of the vote on Friday protested violently against the fact that the right-wing majority in parliament had bundled the rave law into a package with other measures and laws, for example on dealing with Corona, and had it voted on as a whole.

Doctors and medical staff who refuse a Covid vaccination are now allowed by law to go back to work.

Under the previous government, those who opposed or refused vaccination were no longer allowed to work in the medical sector.

The opposition sees this as the wrong sign given the corona numbers in China, for example.
