The world says goodbye to King Pelé, synonymous with football

by CNN

Pele's legacy is impossible to sum up in words.

For more than 60 years, the name Pelé has been synonymous with soccer.

He played in four World Cups and is the only player in history to win three, but his legacy stretched far beyond his trophy and his remarkable scoring record.

“I was born to play soccer, just like Beethoven was born to write music and Michelangelo was born to paint,” Pelé said.

Brazil's incoming president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, took to Twitter to pay his respects to Pele, saying "few Brazilians have carried the name of our country as far as he has."

“Despite how different the Portuguese language was, foreigners from the four corners of the planet soon found a way to pronounce the magic word: 'Pelé,'” added Lula.

Soccer players, politicians and celebrities sent their condolences and messages for the departure of the king of soccer, who for many is the best player in history.

Pelé's life and philosophy in his own words

Credit: SAMUEL KUBANI/AFP via Getty Images

Pelé was not shy: either in interviews or on social media more recently, the Brazilian soccer star was openly expressing his opinions, often controversial ones.

Here, a review of seven of the phrases with which "O Rei" explained himself and his philosophy in sport.

"I was born to play soccer": the explanation of his gift

The Brazilian soccer legend addressed his special talent for the ball on many occasions.

One of her most remembered phrases in this regard, not without controversy for some, was: "I was born to play soccer, just as Beethoven was born to write music and Michelangelo was born to paint"

"I always wanted to be like him": the figure of his father

Pelé continually talked about his father's figure, who was his great inspiration to dedicate himself to football.

"My father was a good soccer player, who scored a lot of goals. His name was Dondinho. I wanted to be like him," he said in an interview with CNN in 2015. "He was famous in Brazil, in Minas Gerais. He was my role model I always wanted to be like him, but what happened, to this day, only God can explain it."

On loyalties: "Today you play for the country that pays the most"

The star signed with Santos at the age of 16 and stayed at that club for the next 18 years.

He only competed on one other team, the New York Cosmos, in a three-year stint in which he did much for the burgeoning popularity of soccer in New York.

For him, loyalty to the club was important.

"The player has lost passion for his country, for his club. But for football itself, no. He will continue to play and have emotion for him. But nobody plays for a club to be loyal to a club," he said in that dialogue of 2015. "Today it is played by the country that pays the most. They do not have that loyalty."

Music was an important part of Pelé's life: he recorded several songs and was a composer for other artists

(CreditXavi Torrent/Getty Images for Pele)

"Music was always part of my life, nothing like improvising on the guitar to brighten up the day."

This is how the Brazilian soccer star, Pelé, saw one of his facets, perhaps a little unknown to some.

On his Instagram account, it was common to see posts by Edson Arantes do Nascimento, the former soccer player's first name, talking about music, asking his followers what their favorite albums were (while he posed in a black and white photo next to a record player ) or remembering, as in this

post

from September 2021, his friend Roberto Carlos, to whom he sent prayers on that occasion after the death of his son Dudu Braga.

The Brazilian music historian Rodrigo Teixeira tells Zona Pop CNN that Pelé's taste in music dates back to his childhood.

“Since he was little, Pelé has had a relationship with music.

His dad gave him a guitar when he was little.

He really liked to sing.

He was a composer... he played well, correctly.

He accompanied himself very well, ”said Teixeira.

Pelé and his passion for music

In 2015, Pelé told CNN in an interview that if he hadn't been a soccer player, he would have dedicated himself to composing music and singing.

"I like to compose music, play the guitar, play the violin," Pele told CNN's Isa Soares.

And for the soccer legend, this facet was not a pending issue.

“During my playing career, I have always liked the world of artists,” Pelé said on Instagram in October 2020.

“I acted in television programs, and I had the honor of recording an album with Elis Regina and another with Sérgio Mendes.

I was an actor in soap operas and even in Hollywood.

And I always loved Brazil and I took Brazil with me everywhere.

These were amazing adventures.

I have always liked Brazilian music and culture”, said the former player.

And, although he was not a virtuoso singer, he came to interpret his own songs, to collaborate with other artists and to compose for some of his friends.

How many titles did Pelé win?

DOMINIQUE FAGET/AFP via Getty Images

Pelé was the player who won the most World Cups in the history of football, but his impressive record does not end there: the multiple championships he won with the

canarinha

are added to those of Santos, the football club where he spent his professional career , and recognition as the best player.

The Brazilian holds the Guinness record for the most World Cups won by a player.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento won the cup three times in total, in Sweden 1958, Chile 1962 and Mexico 1970. He won his first trophy when he was just 17 years old.

Two other data are added to this record: only 20 other players won more than one World Cup, but none reached three and eight of that total have World Cup titles in which they did not start.

On the other hand, Pelé won three of the four World Cups that he played, that is to say, a large majority.

The only title that he did not achieve was the one in 1966.

In the 14 games he played representing the

canarinha

, he scored 12 goals in total and made 8 assists.

He never got a yellow or red card.

(In Sweden, especially, Pelé's performance was key: he scored Brazil's only goal in the quarter-final against Wales, scored a

hat-trick

in the semi-final against France, and scored a brace in the final against Sweden that finished 5- 2, remember the Guinness page).

In two of the World Cups Pelé also received personal distinctions: in 1958 he was chosen as the best young player, according to the specialized Transfermarkt page, and in 1970 as player of the tournament.

His greatest number of titles, however, is with Santos, the team in which Pelé – whom the president of Brazil declared a national treasure, preventing him from signing for a team outside the country – developed his career.

Soccer legends react to Pele's death

franz beckenbauer

“Football has lost the greatest player in its history today, and I have lost a unique friend.

Born in Três Corações, Pelé had three hearts: for football, for his family and for everyone.

One who played with the stars and always kept his feet on the ground.

I went to the US in 1977 because I really wanted to play with Pelé in the New York Cosmos.

That time with him was one of the best experiences of my career.

We won the US championship on the first try and Pelé called me his brother.

That was an unimaginable honor for me.

Soccer will always be yours, my friend!

You will always remain.

Thank you for your game, oh Rei!"

Dio visibilidad a Brasil.
