The newly elected Republican Congressman George Santos made up large parts of his CV – and has now admitted it.

The Democrats in the House of Representatives have been demanding consequences since Santos' lies became public.

They are calling for an ethics committee investigation and for Republicans to expel Santos from the US Congress.

The 34-year-old had lied about his former employers, his alleged university degree and his alleged Jewish descent, among other things.

In the meantime, even the prosecutor's office in Santos' constituency in New York's Long Island district is dealing with the case.

The "lies and inconsistencies" associated with Santos are "simply breathtaking," prosecutor Anne Donnelly said in a statement.

"No one is above the law, and if a crime has been committed in this county, we will prosecute."

Nevertheless, Santos' future Republican colleagues in the House of Representatives have not yet commented on the cause.

Kevin McCarthy, the leader of the Republican faction in the House of Representatives, and his leadership team have remained silent so far.

In the midterm elections in November, Republicans won a narrow majority of 222 to 213 votes there.

Only Santos' future Republican colleague, Long Island Rep. Nick Lalota, said he was concerned about the revelations.

Joining Democrats in calling for an ethics committee investigation, he said in a statement, "New Yorkers deserve the truth and House Republicans deserve the opportunity to govern without that distraction."

So far, Santos has refused to resign, saying in a radio interview: »I am being sworn in.

I'll take office." Hakeem Jeffries, the new House Democratic leader who succeeded Nancy Pelosi, told journalists last week, "We need answers from George Santos.

He seems to be a fraud through and through.

His entire life story is made up.

"He's going to have to answer this question: Did you cheat the voters in New York's third congressional district?"

yes
