In his research, he became interested in the role played by the papacy in 16th century Europe by examining its use of the power to excommunicate and depose princes.
In passing from life to death, every pope falls from the supreme office he exercised.
For Benedict XVI, this stripping was anthume because of his voluntary renunciation of the sovereign pontificate in February 2013. Nine years and ten months later, his death brings us back to his abdication: it was not only the way for Joseph Ratzinger to prepare to die well, but also and above all the ultimate lesson of the teacher who had remained Benedict XVI, his testament on the exercise of power in the Church.
