Aung San Suu Kyi's political party on Saturday denounced the Burmese junta's sentencing the previous day of the imprisoned ex-leader to seven additional years in prison, while assuring that he would continue to oppose the military in power.
With this sentence pronounced for corruption after a river trial, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate overthrown by the army in early 2021 and now 77 years old will have to spend a total of 33 years behind bars.
The judge appointed by the junta "
did not respect the law
", deplored in a press release the central committee of his party, the National League for Democracy (LND).
Aung San Suu Kyi and her ally Win Myint, the former president who received the same seven-year prison sentence on Friday, "
worked for the development of the country while in power and they took action in compliance with the law
”, continued this body.
The NLD "
will continue to work with the people (...) in favor of the release of all political prisoners, to get rid of the military dictatorship and fight for justice
", she added.

The military cited widespread voter fraud in the November 2020 legislative elections, won handily by the National League for Democracy, to explain its coup, which sparked huge protests and a bloody crackdown.
International observers for their part at the time concluded that the poll had been largely free and fair.
The NLD was decimated by the February 2021 putsch and many of its senior officials are in hiding or imprisoned.
