China has renewed its strong opposition to the planned US arms sales to the Chinese region of Taiwan, stressing that the United States, by doing so, is undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

Xinhua quoted Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, as saying yesterday in response to a media inquiry about the recent US decision regarding arms sales to Taiwan: The planned US arms sales seriously violate the one-China principle and the Three Joint Communiques between China and the United States. .

She explained that by doing so, the United States is colluding with and supporting the so-called Taiwan independence forces and undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, adding that Washington must deal with this issue wisely.

"We urge the United States to abide by the one-China principle and the three joint communiques between China and the United States, fulfill its commitment not to support the so-called Taiwan independence, and stop arms sales and military contact with Taiwan," Lian said.

Lien also warned Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party authorities that any attempt to resist reunification, through military build-up or collusion with outside forces, in pursuit of so-called Taiwan independence is doomed to failure.

A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry (Wang Wenbin) urged the United States yesterday to stop arms sales to the Chinese region of Taiwan, and military contact with it, and to stop creating new factors that might lead to tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
