why is it important

  • In the previous vote on the issue that took place a few weeks ago in one of the UN committees, the Ukrainians voted in favor of the proposed Palestinian resolution, despite Israel's requests.

  • Ukrainian sources claimed that this was a response to Israel's refusal to supply defensive military equipment to Ukraine.

In Israel they reacted with great anger and summoned the ambassador of Ukraine for an inquiry.

Behind the Scenes

  • A senior Israeli official noted that Netanyahu spoke with Zelensky as part of a series of talks he has with foreign leaders in an attempt to convince them to change the way their country votes, oppose the Palestinian decision or at least refrain.

  • A source in the Ukrainian government said that during the conversation with Netanyahu, Zelensky, in exchange for changing the vote, asked to hear how the new government in Israel would change policy and help Ukraine with defensive military equipment, especially in the face of Russian attacks using Iranian-made UAVs and ballistic missiles.

  • According to the Ukrainian source, Netanyahu refused to commit or provide details on the matter and only said that the vote was approaching and he would be ready to talk about it in the future.

Zelensky did not like Netanyahu's answer and did not commit to vote against or abstain.

what are they saying

  • "The two leaders did not come away satisfied from the conversation and did not get what they wanted. Zelensky finally decided not to vote at all in order not to create a crisis and give the relationship with Netanyahu a chance," said the source in the Ukrainian government.

  • A senior Israeli official said that although Ukraine did not support the decision, Israel is disappointed that instead of abstaining it preferred not to vote at all.

  • The Prime Minister's Office responded: "Prime Minister Netanyahu spoke with President Zelensky, and Ukraine, which previously voted in favor of the anti-Israel resolution, was absent from the vote this time. Beyond that, we do not refer to the content of the political talks that took place."
