Before New Year's Eve, large hardware store chains will stop selling firecrackers and rockets.

Which hardware stores are we talking about?

And what is the main rationale.

Munich - New Year's Eve 2022 is coming up.

The first New Year's change after the corona pandemic made the usual celebrations impossible twice in a row.

On New Year's Eve 2020, there was a strict ban on assemblies throughout Germany.

New Year's Eve 2022: Obi, Toom, Hornbach - Many hardware stores are taking firecrackers out of their range

Proper fireworks in groups were not allowed.

It's all different this year.

Firecrackers, rockets, fountains - fireworks fans no longer have any hurdles.

Or is it?

Because: Firecrackers on New Year's Eve are no longer the trend, as a survey by the

Freisinger Tagblatt

showed.

The reasons: environmental protection and sustainability, in times when it is a question of reducing emissions in Germany with a view to the future.

Many hardware stores no longer offer the New Year's firecrackers and rockets in their range.

Among them are real hardware store giants like Obi, Toom and Hornbach.

For reasons of sustainability, many Obi markets no longer offer rockets and firecrackers.

According to the

, these can only be purchased in non-centrally controlled branches.

Means: Individual markets can still offer fireworks.

But: In the Bavarian metropolis of Munich, for example, there isn’t a single obi market where you can buy crackers before New Year’s Eve.

  • Obi Markt Munich-Westend

: "Nothing at all!" said an employee on a telephone request from

    Merkur.de

, whether they had received any firecrackers or crackers.

Here, too, reference is made to the topic of sustainability.

  • Obi Markt Munich-Trudering:

The same applies to the large branch in the east of Munich.

Fireworks fans from the Isar metropolis and the surrounding area also go away empty-handed in this market.

  • Obi Markt Munich-Daglfing:

"Obi is not doing this year for environmental reasons," said an employee from the third large branch when asked.

In addition to emissions, they cause a high risk of injury: crackers and firecrackers on New Year's Eve.

Toom: Respect for the environment - no firecrackers and rockets on New Year's Eve

"Respect for those who do it themselves" is the company slogan.

Apparently, the respect for sustainability is so great at the hardware store giant from Cologne in the Rhineland that it completely dispenses with firecrackers, firecrackers, fire fountains and rockets.

The same applies to the Bauhaus chain of DIY stores.

Hornbach: No New Year's firecrackers for "reasons of animal and environmental protection"

According to Hornbach, the range was adjusted to include New Year's fireworks at the suggestion of "animal and environmental protection associations".

The hardware store giant points out that all fireworks items were removed from the range for New Year's Eve 2019 "for reasons of animal and environmental protection".
