The M-23 organization renewed its attacks on the Congolese army • The European Union called on Rwanda to stop supporting the guerrilla army • Thousands of people fled their homes and there is no end to the misery in sight

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, fighting has resumed between members of the M-23 organization and the Congolese army and members of the African Union forces who are fighting in the guerrilla organization alongside the army.

According to reports coming from the country, thousands of refugees are fleeing from areas where the Tutsi rebels, who are waging a stubborn war against the central government in Kinshasa, have entered.

On Tuesday, the European Union published a severe condemnation and called on Rwanda and its president Paul Kagame to stop supporting the rebel organization, whose people belong to the Tosti group to which the Rwandan president belongs.

A UN report stated last year that Rwanda is behind the arming and strengthening of the rebels in northeastern Congo.

The organization's supporters in Rwanda and Uganda claim that in the places where the organization's members arrive, there is peace and that citizens are not expelled from their homes, but disturbing documentation of an influx of refugees, most of them members of the Hutu group, which is the majority in the region, indicates that the locals fear the organization's members, who are well armed and equipped.

Last week, it was reported about the organized withdrawal of M.23 members from the town of Kibumba and a ceremony was held with the participation of the commanders of the organization, members of the peacekeeping force of the African Union and the Congolese army, as part of a "good will initiative".

However, yesterday they announced in Kinshasa that the withdrawal was a "deception operation" and that members of the guerrilla organization are threatening to occupy the city of Goma, the capital of Kivu province and the largest city in the east of the country.

The organization returned to activity earlier this year in a series of ambushes against the Congolese army while gaining support from part of the local population.

The organization ceased operations in 2017 after international pressure had already been exerted on the government in Rwanda to cease aid and funding for the organization's members, but social and ethnic tensions in the Congo reignited the conflict and the organization returned to receiving funds and weapons from the government in Kigali.
