Ituran's study: a huge increase in the number of thefts compared to 2021 due to a lack of spare parts for vehicles • The method: sophisticated theft squads use advanced technological means and move the vehicles to PA territories

The lack of spare parts for vehicles and the increase in self-use of stolen vehicles in the Palestinian Authority led to a 53% increase in vehicle theft incidents during the year 2022, compared to the year 2021.

According to a study by the Ituran company on car thefts in 2022, which was carried out using a national sample of approximately 700,000 vehicles, 43% of the thefts were carried out by coding through the vehicle's OBD socket;

In 32% of the incidents, the vehicles were stolen in a violent break-in and attempted driving using hacked car computers;

In 15% of the incidents, the car key was found in the possession of the thief;

In 9% of incidents the vehicle was stolen by towing and loading;

And in 1% of the incidents the vehicle was stolen from its owner.

In 2022 there was an increase in the number of thieves using modern technological means when stealing a car.

The thieves arrive with a device that connects to an OBD socket or a frequency scanner, reboots the vehicle's computers, thus driving the vehicle and stealing it.

In the analysis of the areas preferred by thieves, the Gush Dan area leads the theft table in Israel with 38% of all attempted thefts, followed by the Sharon area with 23%, the southern area with 14%, the Shefala area with 7%, Jerusalem and Modiin with 11%, the northern area with 4 %, and Yosh with 3%.

The types of vehicles with the highest frequency of theft attempts for 2022 are jeeps and jeeps - 44%, private vehicles - 30%, commercial vehicles - 6%, trucks - 3%, motorcycles - 15%, and mechanical engineering equipment - 2 %.

According to the study, about 40% of the stolen vehicles were from the 2020-2022 production year, about 33% from the 2017-2019 production year, about 20% from the 2014-2016 production year, and about 7% of the stolen vehicles were manufactured in 2013 and later.

The study also revealed that in 2022 the days when the highest number of vehicle thefts were recorded were Monday and Tuesday.

Follow the police

In Ituran, we noted that in recent years the car thieves are part of organized criminal organizations, which are usually headed by the owners of car slaughterhouses.

The heads of the organization operate a skilled system for car theft, which includes an information gathering squad, a car theft squad and a transport squad.

The information gathering squad locates the vehicles required by the head of the organization;

The car theft squad is responsible for transporting it to a cooling point near the place of theft;

And the transport squad is responsible for moving the stolen vehicle to the authority's premises.

The activity is accompanied by observers, who report the presence of police forces or enforcement formations to squads in the field, in an attempt to escape and complete the theft.

When the vehicle arrives at the vehicle slaughterhouse, it is routed to be broken down into spare parts or for self-use in the PA territories.

Nir Sharetzky, CEO of Ituran, said that since the beginning of 2022, the company has led to the capture and arrest of 264 rings of thieves, who planned to get their hands on vehicles worth NIS 1.5 billion.
