The move that the ultra-Orthodox were waiting for:
at the first management meeting that took place today (Sunday) at noon, the Ministry of Finance instructed Minister Smotrich to prepare orders as quickly as possible for the next few days to cancel the one-time tax and the sugary drink tax that was implemented in the outgoing government.
Even before Smotrich's move, the Union of Public Health Physicians and the Histadrut of Veterinary Doctors today sent an appeal to the members of the Knesset's Finance Committee "not to support a policy that encourages the consumption of single-use plastics."
"Such a hasty step should not be taken, Resher will place a health and environmental burden on the public in Israel, without considering the health and environmental consequences and without a proper public and professional discussion," they wrote.
On November 1, 2021, the government decided to impose a purchase tax on disposable utensils that contain plastic at NIS 11 per kg. The purpose of the tax was to double the final price of disposable utensils to consumers in order to reduce their use, because they are harmful to the environment.
The analysis published by the Bank of Israel about a month ago shows that the actual increase in the prices of glasses was 70% higher than the one derived from the imposition of the tax.
As a result, there was an average increase of NIS 22 per kg, compared to an increase of about NIS 13 (11 NIS plus VAT that also applies to the tax) derived from the imposition of the tax.
