The most significant event in China should be the end of the anti-Covid-19 "oppression".
In the last days of 2022, Beijing did an about-face, ending three years of a strict policy marked by drastic confinements and repeated tests.
But this is not the end of Covid.
Faced with growing protest from the population, and even sometimes riots, the authorities have opened all the floodgates – the last, quarantine on arrival in the country, will be abolished on January 8.
As a result, the pandemic is more present than ever in a poorly or poorly vaccinated population, where repeated confinements have hampered the development of collective immunity.
The health system is in dire straits and, while Beijing no longer communicates on the subject, hundreds of millions of Chinese are sick.
The Chinese press predicts a return to a "normal" situation in the spring.
In the meantime, the outbreak could lead to up to two million deaths.
