Poverty, political polarization and international image: Lula assumes an agenda full of challenges
Federico Rivas Molina
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva begins his third term this Sunday, January 1, the most decisive of his political career.
He knows that his image in history will depend on what he does or doesn't do over the next four years.
The challenges he will face starting Monday are enormous.
The outgoing president, Jair Bolsonaro, leaves a scorched earth on issues as important as political coexistence, democratic quality, international relations or the fight against climate change.
The largest democracy in Latin America also carries the burden of an economy that is not growing enough and adds more and more poor people.
More than 30 million people are hungry in Brazil and depend on state aid to live.

There are four hours to go before the start of the official ceremony and the administrative heart of Brasilia, the scene of Lula's inauguration, is little by little dyed red, the color of the Workers' Party.
People have come from all the states of Brazil, in some cases traveling thousands of kilometers by car (Brazil is a huge country) to see Lula president for the third time.

Nicolás Maduro will be missing, despite being invited by Lula.
The Bolsonaro government revoked the ban on the Venezuelan from entering the country, but this morning the Brazilian Foreign Ministry confirmed that there will be no travel from Caracas to Brasilia.
In his place will be the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez.
The guest list includes the presidents of Argentina, Alberto Fernández;
from Colombia, Gustavo Petro;
from Chile, Gabriel Boric, from Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, or from Germany, Frank Walter Steinmeier.
Spain will be represented by King Felipe VI.
The delegation landed in Brasilia on Sunday morning and was received by the Second Vice President of the Government of Spain, Yolanda Díaz.
The Workers' Party assures that the number of international delegations triples that of 2019, when the far-right Jair Bolsonaro was sworn in as president.
The reinsertion of Brazil in the world is one of the priorities of Lula da Silva, who promised to put an end to the isolation process initiated by the outgoing president.

Lula da Silva
A hopeful Brazil gives Lula a new chance
Naiara Galarraga Gortazar
Four years after elevating a president who capitalized on anger against politicians and filled the government with the military, Brazil resumes this Sunday the path of the most classic politics with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 77 years old.
Former union leader and president between 2003 and 2010, he returns to the head of state with the promise that his compatriots will be happy again.
His priorities are to reactivate the economy, fight hunger, poverty and that the first Latin American power shine again on the international scene.
With him, the left returns to the Brazilian government after the traumatic impeachment, in 2016.
