Numerous accidents were registered in Germany on New Year's Eve.

A 17-year-old died when using pyrotechnics, two men were severed limbs.

Munich/Berlin – For the first time since 2019, numerous people in Germany celebrated New Year's Eve without restrictions caused by the pandemic.

At least in Berlin, this led to "significantly" more missions than in the past two years.

Bad accidents occurred in several cities, in Berlin emergency services were attacked and fireworks were fired at them.

The police in Germany drew a mixed balance on Sunday night.

For example, while the police headquarters in southern Hesse ended the first half of New Year's Eve "without any major anomalies", the Berlin police reported "significantly" more operations than in the past two years.

As the police in the capital wrote in the short message service Twitter on Sunday night, police officers and firefighters were "massively attacked with firecrackers" when extinguishing a burning car.

"We are now securing firefighting with additional emergency services." In the Tempelhof district, pyrotechnics and a fire extinguisher were thrown at a bus.

The front windshield was destroyed.

According to the police, 60 to 80 people tried to light a vehicle with fireworks in the Lichtenrade district.

Also in the capital, the windows of a shop were "blown away".

An officer suffered injuries.

In Mitte, a woman was injured in the neck by a firecracker.

The police also reported operations in connection with fireworks from other parts of the city: "Idiots shoot pyro at passers-by in #Moabit."

The Saxony police spoke of "smaller fires due to misdirected pyrotechnics".

A 17-year-old was seriously injured in Leipzig on New Year's Eve when using pyrotechnics and later died in the hospital.

Third-party negligence is currently excluded, the police said on Sunday morning.

No further information on the case could be given at this time.

In Baden-Württemberg, a man was seriously injured by a self-ignited firecracker.

In Schleiz-Crispendorf in the Saale-Orla district, a 21-year-old lost his hand in an accident involving an explosive device.

The illegal ball bomb exploded as soon as it was ignited, the spokesman said.

Despite the serious injuries, the men are not in mortal danger.

New Year's Eve in Germany: Man lights fireworks and is run over by a car

When lighting fireworks on the street, a pedestrian in Saxony-Anhalt was hit by a car and fatally injured.

The 42-year-old was thrown several meters across the road by the force of the impact early Sunday morning, the police said.

He died at the scene of the accident in Schönebeck (Elbe) in the Salzland district.

The 61-year-old driver fled after the accident and initially parked his car on a side street.

A witness followed him in his own car and, according to police, was able to persuade him to turn back.

After that, the 61-year-old had a breath alcohol level of 1.86 per mille.

A blood sample and driver's license were taken from him.

In Regensburg, on New Year's Eve, the fire brigade is deployed on a large scale.

Several vehicles are on fire here.
