Opinion After the Holidays: The American Version | Israel today

2023-01-01T07:33:52.187Z

In closed conversations, President Biden expressed himself as if the agreement with Iran was "dead" • This is an outburst that corresponds to the arrogant and clumsy behavior of the American president

An atmosphere of procrastination and of waiting until "after the holidays" took over Washington.

To the traditional Christmas holiday, which this year was marked by a storm the likes of which the United States has not experienced in years, was also added caution due to the change of government in Israel and domestic disturbances in the fields of society and the economy. After all, with all due respect to Israel, the American citizen is more interested in oil prices and inflation rates, and according to them he will cast his vote in the next presidential elections.

But the silence that Washington emits is a deceptive silence, and it can be assumed that soon we will again find ourselves facing an American administration headed by a president who is described as lethargic and detached from reality, but who has enough forces and instinctive factors full of energy that may push him to become overactive, and certainly after he has received a boost in the midterm elections for Congress last month.

The Iranian nuclear issue is, of course, the most important issue for the Biden administration, and he wants to remove it from his agenda by reaching an agreement with the Ayatollah regime, before it clouds and even tarnishes his presidency, which has so far passed without unnecessary complications, with the exception of the unfortunate withdrawal from Afghanistan, which has already been forgotten by everyone.

In closed conversations, President Biden expressed himself as if the agreement with Iran was "dead".

This is an outburst that matches the American president's clumsy and clumsy behavior.

But such verbal outbursts, which are soon leaked to the media, often turn out to be a deliberate move behind which is a hidden goal - and in our case, to lull the vigilance of those who oppose the agreement, including Israel, so that they do not fail to achieve it.

It is a fact that Israeli intelligence estimates that the Biden administration will seek to advance a nuclear agreement with Iran, taking advantage of the plight of the Ayatollah regime, due to the worsening economic situation in Iran and in view of the hijab protest that the regime in Tehran is unable to suppress.

On top of that, there is the "Palestinian issue".

A hint of what is to be expected can be found in the hyperactivity shown by the American ambassador to Israel, Thomas Neides, who often deviates from the accepted rules of protocol.

It is possible that Neides is jealous of Sam Lewis, the American ambassador to Israel during the Begin and Shamir eras, who became known as the "High Commissioner" because he did not refrain from interfering in Israeli politics, taking advantage of his position as an almost single link between the White House and the Israeli government.

But the Palestinian issue no longer interests anyone.

The Arab world has abandoned it for a long time, and this is evidenced by his siding with Netanyahu after the elections, in a way that arouses suspicion that the Arabs preferred the Likud leader over his competitors from the start, because he was seen by them as a strong leader with credentials, especially on the Iranian issue.

It goes without saying that the issues that preoccupy Israeli public opinion, including LGBT rights or the legal system, are not understood at all by our Arab partners and are far from interesting to them. But even on the Palestinian street there is no expectation of a renewed peace initiative. The Palestinians are tired and weak, and the fact is that the terrorist attacks in the West Bank are troubling And as deadly as they are, they do not sweep the Palestinian public after them, who mostly show indifference and even apathy, and are apparently not eager to start a renewed intifada.

As we know, the Americans live in their own reality, which does not communicate with the reality on the ground.

There are among them who still believe, as it was customary to believe in the 70s and 80s of the last century, that the solution of the Palestinian question is the key to all the problems of the Middle East.

However, past experience shows that the flowering of unrealistic expectations for a solution nowadays, which ends up crashing into the ground of reality, always pushes for escalation and flare-up, and removes any chance of a settlement under the previous one.

The Biden administration, which is at the head of Israel's most important ally, must be treated with respect, certainly there is no need to anger them unnecessarily with meaningless statements and actions on the ground.

But this does not mean that you have to accept his every claim and dictate.

What should be done is to respect him and help him conquer his desire.
