What has happened in the past few hours

Russia continued air strikes on Ukraine at the beginning of the new year.

About half an hour after midnight, Russian attacks hit two districts of the city of Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced via Telegram.

'Explosion heard in capital.

Anti-aircraft defenses working,” reported Klitschko.

Shortly before the turn of the year, kamikaze drones flying in from Russia were also reported in Ukraine.

Air alerts were raised for the cities of Odessa and Mykolaiv in the south and Dnipro in the center of the country, Unian agency reported.

The alarm was later extended to eastern Ukraine.

Mykolayiv military administrator Vitali Kim reported two formations of drones sighted in his area.

The air defense opened fire on the Iranian-made drones.

Russia had already attacked Ukraine massively from the air throughout New Year's Eve.

According to Mayor Klitschko, one man was killed and at least 20 others injured in the attacks on Kyiv.

According to the authorities, people were also injured by Russian shelling in several other regions.

"War criminal Putin 'celebrates' New Year's Eve by killing people," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the capture of the village of Doroshnyanka in the Zaporizhia region and a prisoner exchange in which 82 Russian soldiers were released.

Kyiv reported 140 Ukrainian soldiers released in the exchange.

That says Kyiv

Head of state Volodymyr Zelenskyj addressed the Russian people directly in a video message.

"A terrorist state will not be forgiven," he said on Saturday.

"And those who order such attacks and those who carry them out will not be forgiven, to say the least."

In Russian, Zelenskyy declared that the neighboring country was not at war with all of NATO "as your propagandists lie."

The war also serves no historically significant goals.

"It (the war) is for a person who stays in power until the end of his life," he said, referring to Vladimir Putin.

"And what's left of all of you, citizens of Russia, is none of his business."

Putin wants to show that he leads the military and has its backing.

"But he's just hiding," said Zelenskyy.

"He hides behind the military, behind rockets, behind the walls of his residences and palaces, he hides behind you and burns your country and your future."

In a short New Year's Eve message, Zelenskyi wished his compatriots a happy new "year of our victory," as he called it.

'Wish a miracle today?

The Ukrainians created them a long time ago,” Zelenskyy said.

He also published a photo of himself and his wife Olena in front of a modestly decorated Christmas tree on Instagram.

Moscow says so

Putin had his New Year's speech recorded surrounded by soldiers.

"It has been a year of difficult, necessary decisions, important steps towards maintaining Russia's full sovereignty and with a tremendous consolidation in our society," Putin said in the speech broadcast on Saturday.

At the same time he accused the West of "lying".

"Western elites have hypocritically assured all of us for years of their peaceful intentions, including solving the most serious conflict in Donbass," Putin said.

“The West has lied about peace and is preparing for aggression.

And today he's not even ashamed to admit it."

humanitarian situation

Most Ukrainians welcomed the new year with light.

The energy suppliers had been instructed to give priority to supplying private households with electricity for the New Year celebrations.

On Saturday there was a large rush in the supermarkets in Kyiv after the air raid.

Despite the holiday, the 11pm local time curfew in force in Kyiv and most areas has not been lifted.

In western regions such as Lviv, Chernivtsi, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi and Rivne, the curfew only applied from midnight.

Only in the westernmost region of Zakarpattia, which borders Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland, was there no curfew.

In general, there was a nationwide ban on fireworks.
