At least 9 people were killed and several others injured in a stampede at a shopping center in Uganda's capital Kampala during the New Year celebrations, police said on Sunday.
After the fireworks were fired outside the Freedom City shopping center, south of the capital, "
a stampede ensued, causing the instant death of 5 people and injuring many others
", said in a statement Luke Owoyesigyire, spokesman for the police.
“
Rescuers arrived at the scene and transported the injured to hospital, where a total of nine people were confirmed dead
,” he continued.
