Accident on the "glass Madonna": boulders hit Munich on the head

On New Year's Day, an ice climber from Munich sustained serious injuries.
He was traveling with a partner in the “Glass Madonna”.
Salzburg/Munich – An ice climber from Munich had an accident in Austria on New Year's Day.
The 24-year-old was hit in the head and shoulder by four boulders about half a meter in diameter, the Salzburg state police said on Sunday evening (January 1).
The accident happened in the "Gläserne Madonna" ice fall on the Enzingerboden in the Stubach valley, around 120 kilometers south-west of Salzburg.
The man was also traveling from Munich with a 38-year-old climbing partner.
This remained unharmed.

According to the police, the younger man was disoriented because of the head injury.
The older man was able to abseil him to the foot of the wall, the police reported.
The two made it together to a mountain railway station, where rescuers treated the injured man and then took him to the hospital.
The accident happened when the men tried to free a trapped rope.
