What is behind it and how will fuel prices develop in 2023?

Munich – At the end of the year, fuel prices will be slightly more expensive again.

As the current ADAC evaluation of fuel prices in Germany shows, a liter of Super E10 currently costs an average of 1.686 euros nationwide.

This means that petrol has become 2.5 cents more expensive within a week.

Diesel has become 1.2 cents per liter more expensive in the same period.

Currently you have to pay an average of 1.816 euros for the self-igniting fuel.

In the previous week, fuel prices had risen again for the first time after several weeks of falling.

But what is behind it and how will prices develop in 2023?

Gasoline and diesel: price increase due to higher crude oil prices

The ADAC attributes the recent price increase primarily to higher crude oil prices.

Brent oil, which is relevant for Germany, has risen by around four US dollars in price since the previous week and made a significant contribution to the higher fuel prices.

The price difference between the two types of fuel still does not even begin to reflect the different energy tax rates: although a liter of diesel incurs a good 20 cents less tax than a liter of Super E10, it currently costs 13 cents more.

According to the ADAC, this is due to the increased demand from truck traffic and the increased need for heating oil.

In addition, due to the shortage of gas, diesel is increasingly being used to generate electricity.

Instead, a "normalization of prices" can be observed for petrol.

ADAC expects a slight relaxation in fuel prices

According to the ADAC, however, there should be a slight relaxation in the coming months once the demand for heating oil, which is usually higher in autumn and winter, has come to an end.

For the beginning of 2023, the association of the world expects "no dramatic changes" in the price situation at the gas stations.

However, in the coming year it may become more expensive at the gas stations in eastern Germany: because of the oil embargo against Russia, the refinery in Schwedt, Brandenburg, will have to do without Russian oil.

So far, according to its own statements, the plant has processed twelve million tons of crude oil every year - nine out of ten cars in Berlin and Brandenburg run on fuel from Schwedt.

Where these enormous amounts are to come from in the future remained open for a long time.

Shortly before Christmas, the responsible State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Michael Kellner (Greens), gave an answer in the Bundestag: In addition to deliveries via the port of Rostock, crude oil for Schwedt should also be brought in via the port of Gdansk.

Together, that should be enough to use 70 percent of the PCK's capacity.

Added to this is crude oil from Kazakhstan.

The supply of the petrol stations in the region is therefore considered to be secured - but the prices are likely to rise due to the more complex logistics.
