Three fire brigades responded to the fire in an apartment building in Kochel on New Year's Day.

The building is currently uninhabitable.

Update from January 2, 9:52 a.m.:

Kochel am See – The police have now estimated the amount of property damage to be around 800,000 euros.

The building was so severely damaged by the fire that it is no longer habitable for the time being.

In particular, the ground floor and attic fell victim to the flames.

After the fire brigade had finished extinguishing the fire, the Weilheim Criminal Investigation Service took over the first police investigations on site.

The Kripo Weilheim will also conduct further investigations into the cause of the fire.

The original message:

Kochel am See – The Kochel fire brigade dealt with two fires on the first day of the year.

A hedge burned shortly after midnight, but the operation at noon on New Year's Day was more serious: an apartment building on Kalmbachstrasse was fully engulfed in fire.

Initially, it was assumed that people were in danger

The alarm went off just after 12 p.m.

"You could already see the smoke developing as you approached," says fire brigade commander Hubert Resenberger, describing the scenario.

For support, the weirs from Ried and Schlehdorf were also alerted.

Once on site, the full extent was revealed: "On the back of the building there was already a fire up to the roof, and the flames had already spread to the roof structure," says the commander.

When the alarm was raised, it was assumed that people could be in danger.

"But the residents had all left the house," says Resenberger.

In order to be able to extinguish the fire properly, the emergency services removed the roof covering.

Firefighting work lasts until the early evening hours

The extinguishing work began immediately.

Some emergency services worked their way inside the building, others uncovered the roof truss in order to be able to extinguish properly.

The operation lasted until the early evening hours.

The fire brigade then took over the inspection to rule out that flames flared up again.
