In Isarwinkel and Loisachtal, too, people are mourning the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who died on Saturday at the age of 95.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen – The Wackersberg pastor Leo Sobik remembered the deceased in a few sentences at the end of the year service in the Arzbach branch church.

"The whole world thinks of him today," said Sobik.

And: "The whole world mourns for him." The emeritus pontiff lived his life for God and people - whether as a pastor, bishop, cardinal or Bavarian pope.

In all churches of the world after the death of Benedict XVI.

the bells rang.

"That was a ring of gratitude," said Father Sobik at the solemn mass on New Year's Eve.

The mild foehn wind had carried the ringing from the Isarwinkl church towers far into the valley in the morning.

Intercessions for the deceased throughout the diocese

During the main service in the parish church of Maria Himmelfahrt in Tölz, the intercessions, which were read out throughout the diocese, were dedicated to the memory of the Pope.

"Benedict XVI.

lived and worked in many different places and yet remained connected to his homeland: give us the joy of the lively community in our common home and let us be open to encounters with people from other origins," it said.

Lifelong friendship with the former Schlehdorf pastor

In fact, the "Bavarian Pope" had a very special connection to the Loisachtal and above all to the long-standing pastor of Großweil and Schlehdorf, Josef Stadler († 2017).

He was on first name terms with the Pope Emeritus.

With his brother Georg Ratzinger, Stadler had attended the boys' seminary in Traunstein from 1936.

The younger brother Joseph Ratzinger soon went to school there as well.

"That's how we got to know each other and met often," Stadler later said.

He fondly recalled that friendship: "Our mothers were very alike," he used to say.

On the motorbike to the guest sermon in the Loisach valley

The contact between the former Traunstein boys' seminarists never broke off.

When Stadler was already a chaplain in Schlehdorf in 1953, he brought Joseph Ratzinger to the Loisach Valley as a guest preacher.

"I picked him up in Freising with my 125 Triumph and brought him back on my motorbike," he said in August 2008. As a present for his 85th birthday, the Schlehdorf parish organized a private audience with Pope Benedict XVI.

during a stay in Brixen.

"It was a very warm encounter," said Stadler.

In addition to memories of youth, thoughts on the universal church were also exchanged.

For decency, he should have addressed the pope as Holy Father, Stadler said at the time.

"But we kept it like we were at school and said Sepp to each other."

Lenggrieser played as the first brass band at a mass in St. Peter's Basilica

Very impressed by his encounter with Benedict XVI.

is still Bernhard Simon.

In 2006, the brass band Lenggries traveled to Rome with leader Simon together with the Lenggrieser Antlass rifle company.

"At that time we were drawn from among all the Isarwinkl bands," Lenggrieser recalls.

As the first brass band ever, the ensemble played at a mass in St. Peter's Basilica and then at a private audience.

“It was impressive when he spoke to us.

That was my best experience with the brass band,” says Simon.

Bavarian mountain riflemen mourn "a friend"

The mountain riflemen were always closely connected to the Pope Emeritus.

One has "lost a friend", according to Governor Martin Haberfellner from Kochel am See.

"Benedict XVI.

has given us many valuable encounters, his attention and appreciative words, which have strengthened the reputation of the Bavarian mountain riflemen not only nationally but also internationally.

He will keep his place in our hearts.” With Benedict XVI.

"a really great one left this world - a great theologian, a great Bavarian and a friendly person with a big heart who trusted in the good in people".

Ordained priest with the later Tölz town priest Berger

A lifelong pen pal connected the emeritus pope with the former Tölz town pastor Rupert Berger.

In 1951 he was ordained a priest together with Joseph and Georg Ratzinger.

They celebrated the 60th priestly jubilee together in St. Peter's Basilica.

But there are not only good memories that connect the people of Tölz with the retired Pope.

It was disputed until the very end how much the then Cardinal Ratzinger knew about the history of Pastor Peter H., who had been convicted of sexual abuse, when he was sent to Bad Tölz in 2008 – without informing the parish authorities about it.

When the abuse became public in 2010, it caused a scandal.
