Ten guards and four inmates were killed last night (Sunday) when gunmen in armored vehicles attacked a state prison in the Mexican state of Ciudad Juarez, across the border with Texas.
This was reported by officials.
The Attorney General's Office announced in a statement that armored vehicles arrived at the prison at 7 a.m. local time, and gunmen opened fire on the guards.
In addition to the dead, 13 people were injured and at least 24 prisoners escaped.
Mexican soldiers and police later took over the prison.
In August, in a riot that broke out in the same prison and spilled into the streets, 11 people were killed.
Violence is not a rare phenomenon in Mexican prisons.
Clashes often break out between inmates from rival gangs linked to drug cartels.
According to the prosecutor's office, before the attack on the prison, the local police were attacked, and the officers managed to capture four suspects.
The police then killed two militants who were also involved in the attack.
