Several people were killed in an explosion at the entrance to the military airport in the Afghan capital Kabul on New Year's morning.
The Afghan Interior Ministry announced this on Sunday, but did not provide any information on the exact number of victims or details.
The AP news agency quoted a spokesman for the Taliban as saying that several people were injured.
The military airport in Kabul is located near the civilian airport and the Ministry of Interior.
According to local sources, all access routes to the site of the attack have been sealed off by Taliban security forces.
No one initially claimed responsibility for the attack.
Since the Taliban took power, IS has stepped up its attacks in Afghanistan.
The focus is mostly on religious minorities and foreign embassies.
Both IS and the Taliban belong to Sunni Islam.
However, both are at odds with each other.
