He did not receive the position of Chief of Staff, but he will still be in Kirya:

Defense Minister Yoav Galant decided today (Monday) to appoint Major General (Ret.) Eyal Zamir as Director General of the Ministry of Defense.

He will replace Amir Eshel, who served as CEO during the days of former Defense Minister Benny Gantz. As I recall, Zamir was a candidate for the position of Chief of Staff, but in the end, Major General Herzi Halevi was chosen.

Zamir will take up his post in the coming weeks at the end of an orderly overlapping procedure with the outgoing general manager (ret.) Amir Eshel and after the completion of the appointment procedure and his approval by the government.

Eyal Zamir (57), served for 38 years in the IDF in a variety of senior combat and command positions.

He graduated from the military boarding school for command and began his career in the Armored Corps, where he performed a series of command duties as a soldier and officer during the first and second intifadas and fighting in the security strip in southern Lebanon.

Later, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Land Arm, in the years 2015-2012 he served as the military secretary of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after that he served as the commander of the Southern Command where he led the campaign to thwart the offensive tunnels penetrating from the Gaza Strip into the territory of the State of Israel and the fight against the terrorist demonstrations within the perimeter fence that began in April 2018 .

"Excelled in all his roles"

In the years 2021-2018, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff under Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi. During this period, he coordinated the work of the headquarters for the implementation of the multi-year plan "Tnufa" and managed all military aid to the civilian sector during the Corona epidemic and during Operation "Guardian of the Walls".

Minister of Defense, Yoav Galant: "Zamir is one of the best commanders to emerge in the IDF in the last generation, his service track is impressive and he excelled in all his positions. My acquaintance with Eyal goes back many years, I knew an outstanding commander and a high-quality manager - brave, cool-headed, professional and good-natured. I am convinced that his familiarity with the security system at all levels will enable him to integrate quickly into the position.

At the same time, Gallant thanked outgoing CEO Amir Eshel: "Amir has many rights in light of his unique and long-standing contribution to the security of the State of Israel.

Amir Eshel performed his duties as Director General of the Ministry of Defense with professionalism and dedication and he deserves thanks and deep appreciation for his achievements and his action to promote the security system on all levels."

The director-designate, Colonel (ret.) Eyal Zamir: "I look forward to working with the employees of the Ministry of Defense, who, from my many years of acquaintance with them, are dedicated professionals imbued with a sense of mission. I congratulate Amir Eshel, the current director-general of the ministry, for his contribution to Israel's security."
