The TV comeback of the Weilheim betting king: the old broom number is still going strong

Simultaneously next to and on the screen: Jürgen Weishaupt from Weilheim and his friends repeated their Beatles broom puzzle in the ARD quiz annual review, with which they became betting kings 17 years ago.

Frank Plasberg moderated the quiz annual review on ARD for the last time on Friday and many millions of viewers watched.
A family from Weilheim was particularly excited because Jürgen Weishaupt presented the guessing team with a difficult challenge in “2022 – The Quiz”.

– Jürgen Weishaupt received an unusual call at the end of October.
"I was just lying comfortably on the sofa and thought it was fake," the musician laughs.
Because it was about a bet that had brought him to television 17 years ago and which should now be reactivated.
"It was a total coincidence back then," the 53-year-old remembers back in 2005.
At that time he was touring the world with his percussion band.
"Waiting is often part of it," he explains, because technical problems are part of everyday life during the sound check.
As the duration of a tour increases, a tour frenzy arises, which would show up in such situations.
"The nonsense then makes its way," says Weishaupt and laughs.
100 songs arranged for the broom
A band colleague once grabbed a broom and "hopped through the hall like a rabbit".
Then an expectant look at those present and the question of which song he had just "sung".
The bandmates caught fire, a funny little game was born and the broomsticks went around.
The band's management liked it and reported the men to "Wetten, dass..?" without their knowledge.
"They thought it was so bizarre and absurd and the ZDF actually wanted us," says Weishaupt.
"Then all of a sudden it became real work," says the drummer.
Because he had the highest hit rate when recognizing the songs, he was chosen to guess.
A genre was needed;
the band quickly came up with the huge repertoire of the "Beatles".
Weishaupt then arranged 100 "Beatles" songs for three broomsticks and wrote down the "Kehr scores".
In the end, the group even became the betting king
They rehearsed a few times and taped everything to practice guessing.
Everything worked out for Gottschalk, the group even became the betting king.
The guitar, which he treated himself to from the profit at the time, is still in Weishaupt's music room today.
"I haven't thought about the performance itself for a long time," admits the father, who now works in his house as a drums and guitar teacher and teaches music at the FOS and BOS Weilheim.
But then in the fall came the call from the ARD production company for “2022 – The Quiz” with Frank Plasberg and brought the bet back to mind.
"Absolutely no way!
Those are olle camels”, was Weishaupt's first reaction and he initially declined.
But he allowed himself to be persuaded to at least ask his bandmates from back then.
The promise followed.
"We saw this as an opportunity to meet up again and have a nice men's outing," reveals Weishaupt.
Celebrities had a lot to nibble on
He found the sheet music from back then in the basement, because for Paul McCartney's 80th birthday in 2022 it was supposed to be "Beatles" songs again.
This time, however, only 15. In addition, one request after another came from the ARD with the request to "stop in" hits of the current year or related to them.
A piece of cake for the studied musicians.

During the recording in Berlin, Weishaupt had to prove his musical knowledge by guessing before he switched to the sweeper himself.
Because Günther Jauch, Barbara Schöneberger, Jan Josef Liefers and Florian Silbereisen should then recognize swept songs.
"Some of them have had a hard time," says the drummer, pleased not to have made it too easy for the celebrities.
"It's really tricky to recognize melodies in the rhythmic structures."
After the recording came the gentlemen's evening
The Weilheimer describes the atmosphere in the television studio as moody and relaxed.
The celebrities were all very nice, we ate together and had a good chat.
The men's evening afterwards with friends, including delicious food and good conversations, also worked out as desired.
Days later, Weishaupt relaxedly followed the show when it was broadcast in prime time on Friday evening, together with his wife and two children on the couch.
He jokes: “Who can look in and out of the television at the same time?”
