Whiskey - for many, it's not just a drink, it's a philosophy.

It's all the nicer for fans when they can lend a hand in the production of the fine drop.

This is possible in the Bavarian Moonshine distillery in Eichenau.

Eichenau – Tenderly, tensely and full of anticipation, Christian Klaus looks at the glass he is holding in his hand.

No wonder, because he made the whiskey that sloshes in it himself - right from the start.

Klaus didn't learn how to make whiskey at all.

Rather, he used a new offer from the Bavarian Moonshine distillery.

"The relationship to the whiskey has grown more and more," says the Gröbenzeller.

"But I had the feeling right from the start that it was really mine." He was supported by Alexander and Markus Schnell from Bavarian..Moonshine.

.

"It was an emotional journey," explains Klaus.

The high point: picking up the 30-liter barrel with your own, very personal whiskey.

flavor

However, a lot of work had to be done before this could happen.

First you had to decide what flavor the whiskey should have: peaty, smoky, sweet or fruity.

Basically, only grain, water and yeast are required for the production of the noble drop.

But depending on the desired flavor, the type of grain changes.

You also have to consider what was previously stored in the barrel - this also affects the taste.

During the fermentation, the whiskey has to be stirred again and again - of course Klaus did that himself.

"The taste will never remain the same in the barrel," explains whiskey connoisseur Klaus and is pleased that he has tasted the drink he created himself down to the last drop.

So you always have a new taste experience.

"You don't have that in the bottle, even if there are of course high-quality ones there."

And so the whiskey connoisseur Klaus almost throws up his hands over his head when it comes to mixed drinks: Whiskey with cola or water - the "No thanks" can be seen in his face.

That spoils every taste.

Alexander and Markus Schnell also advise against another "bad habit", as they call it, namely drinking whiskey cold or even ice-cold.

"Please always serve at room temperature," says Markus Schnell.

A careful smelling of the glass and then a light sipping round off the enjoyment.

By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular

FFB newsletter.)

But for the trio, the pleasure and connection with the culture surrounding whiskey does not stop with the drink.

Klaus, for example, regularly attends when the Irish celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Munich on March 17th.

For Markus Schnell, on the other hand, the Highland Games in Scotland are a personal highlight.

These are traditional events with sporting competitions such as tree trunk throwing or barrel rolling.

He also regularly travels the country in the north of Great Britain with his mobile home.

And Schnell likes to combine that with visiting distilleries.

"There were already a lot." Experiences and adventures that he is happy to incorporate into the distillery in Eichenau.

The range he can offer is therefore correspondingly large: gin, rum, fruit brandy.

"We once made potato schnapps for a farmer," he says proudly.

He is also satisfied with the pure business balance sheet.

Bavarian Moonshine coped well with both Corona and delivery difficulties or energy costs.

"2022 was a good year," says Markus Schnell.

Farmers distilled liquor under the full moon

The name "Bavarian Moonshine" goes back to Prohibition.

Between 1920 and 1933, the manufacture and sale of alcohol was banned in the United States.

Farmers distilled their liquor black.

They moved the production facilities, the distilleries, to forests and they worked at night.

They preferred to do this under the full moon to have relatively good light conditions.

Hence the name "Moonshine".

But they did even more to avoid being discovered.

"The alcohol wasn't put into barrels, that would have been too obvious," explains Alex Schnell.

Therefore, the brew was filled into mason jars.

There is regular cooperation between the distillery and the Brauhaus Germering.

You offer tastings of each other's products.
