Ukrainian military reports shooting down 39 drones in the night

10:39 a.m .:

According to their own statements, the Ukrainian military shot down 39 drones during the Russian attack on Kiev and the surrounding area at night.

The military speaks of a "massive attack" by the Russian armed forces.

The drones are of the Iranian type Shahed, it said.

In addition, two Russian-type drones and an air-to-surface missile were destroyed, the military said on Twitter.

The Ukrainian military did not say how many drones Russia fired in total.

According to Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko, a 19-year-old man was taken to a hospital in the Desnianskiy district of Kiev after drone debris appeared to have hit a building.

SPD foreign politician Müller confirms no to Leopard tank delivery

9 a.m.:

SPD foreign policy expert Michael Müller has confirmed the federal government’s refusal to deliver Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

"It will certainly stay with our foreign policy line, that there are no ill-considered solo efforts," said Müller in the ARD "Morgenmagazin".

Such weapons could only be supplied "in coordination with our NATO partners."

Countries like the USA and France, "which have comparable systems to this Leopard tank, just don't deliver either," emphasized Müller.

Germany wants to "definitely continue to avoid NATO becoming a direct war party."

What is certain, however, is that Germany is supporting Ukraine with "the most modern weapons" "as long as it is necessary".

Former NATO general expects ceasefire in 2023

8:22 a.m.:

Former Bundeswehr and NATO general Hans-Lothar Domröse expects a ceasefire in Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine later this year.

"I expect a standstill in early summer, when both sides say: Now it's no longer of any use," Domröse told the newspapers of the Funke media group.

He expects this to happen between February and May.

After that, you can negotiate.

"We will have a ceasefire in the course of 2023," Domröse surmised.

A solution must be acceptable to both sides, said Domröse - "even if Putin would actually like to have all of Ukraine and Zelenskyy would like to liberate all of Ukraine again."

The CDU European politician David McAllister, on the other hand, emphasized that the Kremlin cannot and must not impose a dictated peace on Ukraine.

"The Ukrainian government alone decides whether and when the conditions for the ceasefire negotiations are in place," the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the EU Parliament told the Funke newspapers.

Russia and security expert András Rácz of the German Council on Foreign Relations said it was unlikely Russia would want to wage an intense war before or during the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

He expects that Russia will therefore want to reduce the intensity of the fighting over the course of the year.

"Also because the supply problems for the Russian army are likely to increase in the summer."
