Anything but peaceful: In Berlin, emergency and rescue services were attacked on New Year's Eve - and not just with rockets.

Now consequences are demanded.

In Berlin, the fire brigade, rescue service and police were exposed to great danger on New Year's Eve.

Task forces from Freising are stunned – and disagree on how sensible a ban on firecrackers is.

District

– Manfred Danner does not hide his anger about the pictures at the turn of the year in Berlin.

"These chaotic people who attack the emergency services with iron bars should be locked away." The district fire council speaks of a "brutalization of society".

Dedication is taken for granted

Danner dares to doubt whether a general ban on firecrackers, as is now sometimes called for, is the solution.

“Those who want to do something do it anyway.

Then it's not rockets that are set on fire, but cars." At the same time, he emphasizes: "It's only an absolute minority of the population who behaves inappropriately." Unfortunately, on the other hand, an enormous number of blue light workers are needed to oppose this small crowd.

He can understand if the voluntary forces capitulate.

"These people would certainly prefer to celebrate with family and friends in peace than to sacrifice their free time and now also their health - for people who unfortunately take this commitment for granted."

This impression is now also created when working in the district - although of course not in the same way as in the federal capital, emphasizes Danner.

"New Year's Eve was very quiet for a two-year firecracker break." And violent attacks on firefighters are virtually non-existent in the district.

Hubert Böck, head of the BRK rescue service in the district, has had other experiences over the years.

“Fighting happens from time to time.

Often because patients are mentally destabilized, but also because of heavy alcohol consumption.” And that increases on days like New Year's Eve.

"The inhibition threshold drops drastically on such days." At the same time, the paramedics would have to move out more and more frequently.

Invest money more sensibly instead of in rockets

"Of course, when people shoot, the risk potential is generally higher," says Böck.

In principle, he has little objection to ordinary rockets that are properly ignited.

"But I don't know if firecrackers are needed that bang loudly and create a pressure wave." And those without a German seal of approval are not without danger.

"From the point of view of the rescue service, a ban on firecrackers would of course be good."

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

What the BRK rescue service manager also cannot understand: “I find it very strange what money was literally wasted this year.

That could be invested much more sensibly.” A possible alternative is a central fireworks display organized by the municipality.

"That's nice too, and above all less dangerous." But he also says: No rockets at all are best for the environment.

General prohibition also punishes peaceful revelers

Freising's police chief Matthias Schäfer is skeptical about a general ban on firecrackers.

On the one hand, implementation is difficult.

"Then the police are only busy punishing such violations." On the other hand, a general ban also affects those who behave sensibly.

"In my opinion, action should be taken against those who misuse the fireworks, shoot the firecrackers at other people or damage things." The police then have the support of the population to enforce these measures.

“If you take action against these disruptors, every normal citizen will accept that.

But you shouldn't apply the watering can principle and immediately report anyone who lights a rocket.”

Riots in Berlin have "new quality"

When looking at Berlin, Schäfer is concerned.

"Of course, the general social development plays a role, something like that doesn't happen overnight." However, what happened on New Year's Eve has a "new quality", especially with regard to the attacks on firefighters and rescue workers.

Schäfer is relieved that there have not been such incidents in Freising so far.

In future, in large cities and conurbations, one must focus even more on prevention in advance and make it clear what the consequences of such misconduct can be.

He emphasizes that using fireworks to harm people is anything but a silly prank – and must be punished accordingly with a fine or imprisonment.
