From Benztown to Kerlsruhe: In Baden-Württemberg, some residents have given their home towns nicknames that have become established over the years.

Here you can find out which joke names bear cities in the Ländle.

Stuttgart - Whether "City of Love" or "Big Apple": Nicknames for large cities, such as in the examples of Paris and New York, evoke associations and are a popular means of emphasizing the special character of a place.

Once a name has established itself, it is difficult to imagine the residents without it.

In Baden-Württemberg, too, many cities have amusing but also provocative nicknames that have prevailed over the years, reports BW24.

Stuttgart: "Benztown", "Kessel", "Schduagrd"

Anyone who thinks of the Baden-Württemberg state capital cannot avoid associations with Mercedes-Benz, Bosch and Porsche.

The heart of the automotive industry beats in Stuttgart.

It is therefore not surprising that the Swabian metropolis is popularly called

"Benztown"

.

Its special location between forest and vineyards also earned the city the nickname

"Kesselstadt"

- in short: Kessel.

Advocates of the Swabian dialect affectionately call their hometown

“Schduagrd”

(colloquial).

On the Internet platform

Reddit

, users also call Stuttgart the unflattering name

"Kaputtgart"

.

Due to its special location, the city of Stuttgart is often referred to simply as "Kessel".

Heilbronn becomes "Heilbronx": Does the city live up to its ghetto image?

Admittedly, the first impression of Heilbronn is probably not very glamorous for most people.

The image of

"Heilbronx"

, as young people in particular call the city in reference to New York's problem district of the Bronx, has strengthened considerably over the years.

However, anyone who strolls through Heilbronn today will be surprised at what has happened here in recent years.

Lidl multi-billionaire Dieter Schwarz is remodeling the entire city according to his ideas and making Heilbronn a sought-after university location.

The Federal Horticultural Show 2019 also left its mark: A spacious, green park in the middle of the city invites you to go for a walk and relax.

You won't find a real "ghetto" here.

Karlsruhe: Studying as a woman in peace and quiet – like a hen in a basket

It is a fact: in Karlsruhe there is a considerable surplus of men – especially among the younger people.

The technical courses at the KIT and at the other Karlsruhe universities are certainly one reason why so many young men are drawn to Karlsruhe.

The city has therefore long been nicknamed

"Guy's Rest"

.

As calculations by the Baden-Württemberg State Statistical Office show, the surplus of men will even increase in the coming years.

In 2025, the difference should be particularly large: According to the calculations, for example, there will be 4,070 26-year-old men for only 2,767 women of the same age.

Pforzheim: "Pforzelona" as an internet phenomenon

It is unclear

exactly who created the

neologism "Pforzelona" .

According to assumptions, however, a lot points to the student environment at Pforzheim University, especially the Marketing and Communication department of the Faculty of Economics.

A first hashtag called #Pforzelona can be dated to the end of 2009.

The author may have alluded to the Spanish city of Barcelona with a wink.

The residents have to decide for themselves whether Pforzelona can keep up with the southern flair.

In any case, the hashtag Pforzelona is now frequently used on social networks and contains both photos of beautiful views of the city and ironic posts.

Mannheim: dialect "Monnem" or "Mannem"

Since locals from the square city speak "Monnemisch" (Kurpfalz dialect), it makes sense that they call their hometown

"Monnem"

.

Different phrases are used in Mannheim's suburbs.

The city is called "Monnem" in the north, which is more strongly influenced by the Odenwald region, while in the south, for example in Rheinau and Neckarau, it is called "Mannem".

Friedrichshafen: Citizens scold the city as a "cemetery port"

"Cemetery harbour"

, "Sleep peacefully", "Friedrichshafen, the most boring city on the lake", "Retiree town" - the Zeppelin city has increasingly dealt with nasty names like these in recent years.

The reason: Open-air concerts, for example, were moved indoors.

"Too many leisure and cultural activities are dying out under bureaucracy," put it a citizen on Twitter.

"Friedrichshafen finds it difficult to be young and innovative." Instead, the city is "stock-conservative and slowed down".

Constance: "The last German tip" down at Lake Constance

With around 78,000 inhabitants, Constance is the largest city on Lake Constance and stretches across the narrow ridge between the Upper and Lower Lakes and a small tip on the southern shore of Lake Constance, which otherwise belongs to Switzerland.

Hence the nickname:

"The last German Zipfele"

.

In a post on

Reddit

, users jokingly call the city

“Constance Noble”

.

Constance is also affectionately called "the last tip of Germany", since the Lake Constance city borders directly on Switzerland in the south.

Ludwigsburg: "Lubu" or "Lombaburg"

Ludwigsburg is also included

in the list on

Reddit that lists cities and their "diminutives" and "nicknames".

In addition to the common abbreviation

"Lubu"

,

"Lombaburg"

appears as a designation.

Lörrach: soak up the sun in the "Tuscany of Germany"

In a nationwide comparison, Lörrach has an above-average number of hours of sunshine.

While the German average is 1,541 hours a year, it is 1,700 hours in Lörrach.

This circumstance has earned the southwestern region the nickname

"Germany's Tuscany"

.
