The image of the American football player Damar Hamlin collapsing during a game has shocked the world of sports and has reminded other cases in which athletes have suffered something similar on the field of play in full action.

The Buffalo Bills safety fell to the ground on the field Monday after making a tackle in the first quarter of a game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hamlin made an outfield tackle on Bengals receiver Tee Higgins before getting up and then falling on his back.

After the scene, Hamlin underwent CPR on the field before being taken out of the stadium.

In June 2021, Danish footballer Christian Eriksen collapsed during the first half of the Euro 2020 match between Denmark and Finland in Copenhagen.

The match was suspended following prolonged efforts by medical staff to resuscitate Eriksen with CPR and a defibrillator after he fell to the ground during a throw-in shortly before the end of the first half.

The Danish midfielder "had died" before resuscitation, according to the doctor Morten Boesen, who treated him.

In July 2022, Eriksen signed a three-year deal with Manchester United.

Tua Tagovailoa

Tagovailoa was sacked by Bengals defensive lineman Josh Tupou and lay immobile on the field for several minutes.

The Dolphins quarterback, who was carried off the field on a stretcher and taken to a nearby hospital, suffered a concussion, according to the team's coach.

On December 30, 2022, the player suffered a concussion during a Green Bay Packers game, just three months after his first injury.

Tagovailoa remains in the NFL's concussion protocol, which is the NFL's protocol for evaluating and caring for players who suffer a concussion.

The player missed the game against the New England Patriots, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel announced.

Ekeng, a 26-year-old Cameroonian midfielder, played for Dinamo Bucharest.

His team was playing Viitorul in Bucharest when it collapsed.

Ekeng fell during the 69th minute of the game and was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to local media.

Gregory Mertens

Belgian soccer player Gregory Mertens collapsed on the pitch during a match and died at the age of 24 in April 2015. Mertens collapsed during the reserve game on April 27 in Genk and received CPR at the scene.

He was taken to a hospital and placed on a life support machine to put him into an induced coma.

Mertens, who had played for Belgium at the Under-21 level, died days after his collapse in hospital.

Fabrice Muamba

Muamba's heart stopped for 78 minutes and doctors at White Hart Lane and London Chest Hospital fought to keep him alive.

Doctors said the soccer player did not respond to 15 defibrillator shocks.

Muamba's plight shocked players and supporters of the Congo-born star when he fell to the ground with no one near him before halftime of the match.

A month later, the footballer was discharged in good health.

Mumba retired from football after playing his final season for Bolton in England in the 2012 season.

Mr Venkatesh

Bangalore Mars Club football player D. Venkatesh, 27, came on as a substitute in the 73rd minute of the match against the South Western Railway team before collapsing in the dying minutes of the match.

The 27-year-old was taking part in a Bangalore District Football Association Division A match.

With no doctor or ambulance nearby, his teammates and the physiotherapist treated the player, who was having seizures, his teammate Janardhan said, according to a report in the Times of India newspaper.

Officials were forced to transport Venkatesh in a jinx-rickshaw taxi (a two-wheeled cart pulled by a person) to a hospital, where he died, local media reported.

Anthony Gate

Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta died in August 2007 after collapsing during a Spanish First League match.

The 22-year-old Spain international collapsed after jogging towards his own goal 35 minutes into the match against Getafe.

His teammates and medical staff rushed to his side and were seen holding him back from swallowing his tongue as he lost consciousness.

Puerta was able to walk from the field, but doctors said he collapsed again in the locker room and had to receive cardiac resuscitation before being taken to hospital where he remained on a life support system.

Puerta died three days later.

Miklos Feher

In January 2004, Benfica's Hungarian international striker Miklos Feher died during a Portuguese league match of a heart attack.

Feher collapsed on the rain-soaked grass in stoppage time of a televised match with Benfica leading 1-0 after scoring through Fernando Aguiar.

The Cameroonian soccer player died of cardiac arrest on June 26, 2003 during a soccer match in the semifinal of the Confederations Cup against Lyon, France.

An opponent was the first to notice the seriousness of the situation.

Despite attempts to revive him for 45 minutes and the fact that he was still alive when he was taken to the medical center on land, Foe died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition that involves abnormal thickening of the heart muscle.

Bill Masterton

Professional hockey player Bill Masterton of the Minnesota North Stars died on January 15, 1968, at age 29, after an injury sustained during an NHL game.
