In none of the four German cities with a population of over a million people is flashed as little as in Munich.

That's according to a new analysis.

The city disputes the figures.

A red flashing light announces it: A few days later, a traffic ticket flutters into the house.

If you drive too fast or ignore a red traffic light, you run the risk of being flashed – but this is far less common in Munich than in other major cities.

Because in no other German metropolis are there so few speed cameras as in Munich.

Five times fewer speed cameras than in Cologne

This emerges from an analysis by Goldstein Rechtsanwälte.

The consumer protection lawyers from Berlin examined traffic monitoring in the 40 most populous cities and evaluated data from the police and traffic apps, among other things.

In order to make the numbers comparable, the number of speed cameras was scaled down to the street area in the cities.

The result was that in Munich there are just 3.4 speed cameras on the streets and traffic lights per day and 1000 hectares of street area - including the permanently installed ones.

That's five times less than in Cologne, which uses an average of 17.4 speed cameras.

In Hamburg it is 11.8 and in Berlin, which has by far the most hectares of road surface, it is still 5.4.

But Munich is not only in a bad position among the four megacities.

In the list of the 40 cities examined, the Bavarian state capital occupies 35th place - far behind the leader Wuppertal, which has a whopping 26.1 speed cameras.

Only in Duisburg, Braunschweig, Essen, Krefeld and Magdeburg do speeders have to worry less about being caught.

City: "Did about 8.2 million measurements in 2021"

But what do the traffic monitors say about the analysis?

In Munich, the city is responsible for speed controls in Tempo 30 zones and traffic-calmed areas.

All other roads and red light violations are monitored by the police - with one exception: with a special permit from the Ministry of the Interior, the municipal traffic control operates a stationary measuring station on Tegernseer Landstraße.

"We also use up to five mobile measuring units that travel to around 20 to 30 measuring locations per day," says KVR spokesman Julien Chauve.

The figures for the past year are not yet available.

In 2021, however, the city took about 8.2 million speed measurements and found 75,000 violations.

Between 180 and 300 violations are reported every day.

The measurements of the police are not yet taken into account.

Police report shows 2160 measurements

For tactical reasons, the police are silent about the number of mobile measuring devices used.

For 2021, however, the safety report of the traffic monitors shows a total of 2160 measurements with mobile measuring devices.

Just over 44,000 warnings were issued and 6,340 drivers were reported.

In addition, there were almost 38,700 speed violations that were measured with the so-called Enforcement Trailer, a mobile speed enforcement device that was introduced in 2021.

The numbers for 2022 are also currently being evaluated by the police.

In view of his own numbers and the police statistics, KVR spokesman Chauve says: "We consider the figures given in the analysis to be unrealistic." Regardless of this, the following applies anyway: If you follow the traffic rules, you don't need to be afraid of being flashed.
